The John Wick universe keeps getting bigger. The upcoming spin-off movie Caine, which follows the blind assassin played by Donnie Yen, has just added young actor Mason Thames to its cast. Lionsgate confirmed the news on June 2, 2026. Thames is known for his lead role in The Black Phone and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake.
Filming for Caine started in Budapest, Hungary, back in April 2026. Donnie Yen is not only returning as the title character but is also directing the movie.
Who Is Joining the Cast of ‘Caine’?
Mason Thames is the newest name on the list. He recently finished work on Idiots and the sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2. His role in Caine is being kept secret for now.
He joins a growing team of assassins. Rina Sawayama is back as Akira, the character who confronted Caine at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4. Dacre Montgomery (famous for Stranger Things) is also part of the movie in a key role.
There are also reports that actress Zhuang Dafei might play Caine’s estranged daughter. Set photos from Budapest showed her on location, which fits the story of Caine trying to reconnect with his family after leaving the High Table.
What Is the ‘Caine’ Movie About?
Caine first appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). He was an old friend of John Wick, forced to fight against him to protect his own daughter. By the end of the film, Caine was freed from his promise to the High Table.
The spin-off will continue right from there. The story follows Caine as he tries to live a normal life. However, the post-credits scene of the last movie showed Akira approaching him with a knife, seeking revenge for her father’s death.
Lionsgate says the film is “stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous.” This means fans can expect the same mix of precise fighting and emotional storytelling seen in Yen’s other work, like Ip Man.
Who Is Making the ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off?
The script comes from a strong team. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman Part II and the BRZRKR adaptation, wrote the screenplay with Michael McGrale and Robert Askins.
Longtime franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are back. Chad Stahelski, the director of the main John Wick films, is also producing alongside Keanu Reeves. While the John Wick 5 movie is also in development, it is unclear if Reeves will appear in this spin-off, though a flashback is always possible.

As of June 4, 2026, Lionsgate has not set an official release date for Caine. However, with filming already underway in Europe, the movie is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2027.
