Actor Johnny Depp lost a huge sum of money from his bank account without even knowing it. The police in Hungary arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly used Deppโs credit card details to make purchases worth over $690,000 (nearly โน7 crore). The fraud went on for almost two years before anyone noticed.
The suspect reportedly used the actorโs American Express card information for online shopping and hotel bookings. Investigators are looking into 308 separate suspicious transactions that happened between January 2024 and December 2025. The man is a Jordanian citizen who was living legally in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
How The Fraud Remained Hidden For Two Years
The accused man used a common trick to avoid getting caught. Instead of taking out one large amount of money, he made many small purchases over time. Investigators believe he hoped this method would not raise red flags with the bank, especially because Depp has a very high spending limit on his card.
The case only came to light earlier this year when a United States bank saw strange activity on one of its wealthy customer accounts. The bank immediately informed the FBI office in Budapest. When detectives looked into it, they found out the account belonged to Johnny Depp. The actor had no idea that hundreds of transactions were happening on his card for such a long period.
Police Raid Leads To Arrest In Budapest
Hungarian authorities traced the digital trail of the suspect. They followed IP addresses, email accounts, and a Hungarian phone number that were used for the bookings and online payments. The trail led them straight to a rented apartment in the Angyalfรถld district of Budapestโs 13th district.
On May 6, armed police officers in tactical gear raided the property. Video footage of the arrest has been circulating online, showing officers detaining the suspect outside the flat. During the search of the apartment, police seized electronic devices that they believe were used in the fraud scheme.
“Investigators said the suspect denies the accusations, although a court has ordered his pre-trial detention.”
Police also found substances suspected to be narcotics inside the apartment. This discovery led to a separate investigation for alleged drug possession against the same suspect.

Questions Remain Over How Card Details Were Stolen
Authorities are still trying to figure out how the suspect got hold of Johnny Deppโs credit card information. Investigators have not ruled out possibilities like data theft, a leak from a previous online transaction, or a cyber attack.
Interestingly, Johnny Depp spent a lot of time in Budapest in recent years. He was there while filming Modi, a movie about Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani which Depp directed. Production took place at several locations around the city including Buda Castle and the Hungarian State Opera House. Police have not confirmed whether his time in Budapest has any connection to the fraud.
The suspect is currently in custody awaiting further court proceedings. Hungarian police have said their investigation into the fraud is still ongoing, and they have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests in this case.
The credit card news came just days after another security issue at Deppโs Los Angeles home. A woman was seen repeatedly entering the actorโs property and filming it. She reportedly wanted to leave a message for him. The woman left before police arrived but was seen later near the gate and down the hill on several occasions.
