Josh Brolin recently shared a surprising story from the set of American Gangster, revealing a moment when he almost clashed with Denzel Washington. The incident occurred in 2007 while they were working together on the Ridley Scott-directed film.
The Incident on Set
In a recent appearance on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Brolin recounted an exchange that almost led to a physical altercation between the two actors. He recalled how Denzel Washington arrived late one day to the set of American Gangster. Despite his tardiness, Washington had no problem rearranging his lines during a rehearsal with Brolin.
Brolin explained that Washington moved lines around without consulting him, leading to some tension. “He said, ‘I think I’m gonna put this down here, and I’m gonna put that up there.’ But he wouldn’t really look at me,” Brolin recalled. The change in the script’s structure didn’t sit well with Brolin, but things escalated when they began practicing their lines.
The Tension Escalates
During their rehearsal, Brolin, who was playing his part with confidence, momentarily forgot his lines. In response, he placed his hand on Washington’s shoulder and asked, “What’s the line?” That gesture was met with an immediate and intense reaction from Washington, who quickly slapped Brolin’s hand away and sharply told him, “Don’t ever f***ing put your hand on me.”
Brolin, taken aback by Washington’s fiery response, feared the situation was about to turn into a fight. He admitted, “I was like, ‘Holy s**, I’m gonna scrap with Denzel Washington.’” According to Brolin, it was Washington’s commitment to staying in character that added to the tension. The actor was clearly immersed in his role, which contributed to the unexpected outburst.
Resolving the Conflict
Despite the initial tension, Brolin was quick to calm himself and assess the situation. After a brief pause, he checked in with Washington, asking, “You good?” Washington’s response was a simple, “Yeah. You?” The two actors then moved past the incident and returned to their rehearsal, continuing their work without further conflict.
A Bond Forged Through Work
Although this brief moment of tension could have escalated, Brolin and Washington now share a mutual respect for each other. Their brief “feud” was just one of many moments on set, and the two actors have since developed a strong bond.
American Gangster is known for its star-studded cast, including Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Idris Elba. Despite the tense moment between Brolin and Washington, their collaboration contributed to the film’s success and legacy.
