The college romance drama Off Campus is getting ready for its second season on Prime Video, but one familiar face will be missing from the new episodes. Josh Heuston, who played musician Justin Kohl in season 1, will not return when the show comes back. Showrunner Louisa Levy confirmed the news, explaining that Justin’s story has reached a natural ending point for now.
The popular series, based on Elle Kennedy’s book series, follows students at Briar University as they deal with love, friendships, and growing up. Season 1 focused on the romance between Hannah Wells and hockey star Garrett Graham. Justin served as a key part of that love triangle, becoming Hannah’s initial love interest before she chose Garrett. Now, with that story wrapped up, the show is moving in a new direction.
Why Justin Will Not Be In The New Season
Levy spoke with TV Guide and made it clear that Justin’s absence from season 2 was a creative choice tied to the show’s changing focus. She said the love triangle that kept Justin connected to Hannah and Garrett has ended, so there is no immediate reason for him to stay on campus.
“Not next season, but I love Josh and I would not write him off if I can find a way to bring Justin back at some point. We never got a chance to meet Stella, who is the person he ends up with in the book. So maybe we’ll find a way to fold him into a future season.” – Louisa Levy, Off Campus showrunner
Levy added that the show does not have Heuston available for the upcoming season, but she left the door open for a possible return later. “Never say never,” she said. This matches the structure of the book series, where each new installment shifts focus to different couples at Briar University.
Heuston Wanted More For His Character
Before the exit news broke, Heuston spoke with Us Weekly about what he hoped to see for Justin in future episodes. The 29-year-old actor shared that he wanted his character to find happiness, even after losing Hannah to Garrett.
“That’s above my pay grade but I just hope Justin finds love and continues to be happy while writing music. Justin is following his heart. He’s a little lover boy at heart. I think things went the way that they went but I think he’ll just continue to do that. He’ll probably go write some nice music about how heartbroken he is and then come back and try to find his love.” – Josh Heuston
Heuston also talked about how he tried to make Justin more than just a typical college heartthrob. “I just tried to give Justin as much as possible. A lot of the time if you fell into a stereotype of another cool guy that does music on campus, you wouldn’t have that love or affinity for him,” he explained. His goal was to make the character feel real and relatable.

Even though Justin is leaving, Off Campus season 2 is still moving forward. The show’s future was confirmed earlier this year, and production is underway. Season 2 will change its focus to a new couple from the Briar University world. According to reports, the next season will center on Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla) and Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn), whose romance is covered in the third book of Kennedy’s series.
This choice skips over the second book, which focuses on Grace Ivers and John Logan. Levy said she wanted to “keep the momentum” going for television audiences. She noted that happy endings work well in novels but can be tricky for ongoing TV shows that need to keep telling stories.
Fans will still see Hannah (Ella Bright) and Garrett (Belmont Cameli) in season 2, but their story will not be the main focus. “They will still be part of it,” Levy assured, while confirming the main romantic leads will shift to Allie and Dean.

Off Campus season 1 is currently streaming on Prime Video in multiple regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India. Subscribers in these countries can watch all episodes of the first season now.
Off Campus season 2 is expected to arrive sometime in 2027. An exact release date has not been announced yet. The show will continue to follow the book series structure, with each season adapting a different romance from Elle Kennedy’s popular novels. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and has gained a strong following since its premiere.
