Mina Chan, a 26-year-old Japanese influencer and well-known ENHYPEN fan, died by suicide during a TikTok livestream on August 5, 2026. The tragic event happened at her home in Seoul, South Korea, and has since sparked serious conversations about online harassment and toxic behavior within K-pop fan communities.
Chan, who had over 80,000 followers on TikTok and more than 150,000 on Instagram, was known online as a superfan of the K-pop boy band ENHYPEN. Her death has brought widespread attention to the darker side of fandom culture and the real-world harm that cyberbullying can cause.

The Events of August 5
On the morning of August 5, Mina Chan went live on TikTok from her residence in Hangangno-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. During the livestream, viewers noticed she appeared visibly distressed and in tears. Many people watching the broadcast became alarmed and contacted authorities, urging them to intervene and help her.
Police received a call from one of her acquaintances around 5:33 a.m. and were dispatched to her apartment. When officers arrived, they found Chan already dead. The livestream was later removed from TikTok.
Her younger sister confirmed the news of her death in an Instagram Story the following day. She wrote:
“My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Controversy That Led to the Backlash
The criticism against Mina Chan started after an incident at an ENHYPEN concert in the United States in July 2026. During the show, Chan gave sunflowers to member Sunoo and asked him to pass roses to fellow member Ni-ki, who is also Japanese. She later explained that she wanted to see a photo of the two members together.
Some fans accused her of overstepping boundaries and trying to get attention. The situation worsened when ENHYPEN member Ni-ki went live on a platform and made comments about fans who try to stand out at concerts. He said:
“Live venues are places where everyone can be happy. It’s a shame there was someone trying to get noticed and show off. That’s kinda disappointing to see some people just want attention for themselves.”

“I feel like my actions ended up taking advantage of Sunoo’s kindness. I’m truly sorry. I feel so apologetic toward Sunoo and all the Sunoo fans.”
She continued:
“By attending ENHYPEN’s fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was. I deeply regret the rude behaviour I exhibited in America. I ruined the atmosphere of the venue by prioritizing my own desire to meet Ni-ki over the precious time Ni-ki, who loves America so much, deserved.”
Despite her apology, the harassment did not stop. She continued to receive hateful messages and criticism from some fans online. Before her death, she shared screenshots of abusive direct messages she had received on Instagram. One message read:
“You only ever see the good side of things, so you’re staying positive. Seriously, please graduate from being a fan already. Watching you act all superior honestly made me sick.”
Family’s Emotional Response
Mina Chan’s family broke their silence after her death, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram. Her mother wrote about the pain her daughter endured and called out the online bullies who targeted her.
“Our daughter was deeply hurt by critical messages directed at her on social media. She was made to feel that her very right to live was being denied, and ultimately, she brought her life to an end. Can you imagine the person you love suddenly disappearing right before your eyes?”
The family also mentioned that they were able to bring her home on August 9, which would have been her 27th birthday. They expressed regret that they could not celebrate her birthday together.
Her mother added:
“We sincerely hope that more people will take the time to think about how their words, photos, videos, and everything else they put out into the world may be received by others.”
Fan Reactions and Outpouring of Grief
Following the news of her death, many followers left tributes on Mina Chan’s final Instagram posts. Some fans expressed anger and sadness over the harassment she faced. One comment read:
“The amount of hate, harassment and blame-shifting in this fandom is genuinely disgusting.”
Another follower wrote:
“We lost a sweet, beautiful and kind girl with a big heart … That people who hurt you aren’t fans and it feels wrong to call them like this because the artists don’t support such behavior and real fans don’t support it either … May you rest peacefully, beautiful girl.”

The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul is investigating the exact circumstances surrounding Mina Chan’s death. Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the final cause of her death.
