Katy Perry’s highly awaited return to a Belgian festival stage after 17 years ended in disappointment when her performance was cancelled just hours before showtime because of severe weather linked to a record-breaking European heatwave.

The 41-year-old pop star was set to headline the Werchter Boutique festival at Festivalpark Werchter on June 27, but government officials ordered the event to shut down early due to incoming thunderstorms and crowd safety concerns for the 55,000 attendees.

Perry shared the news with her followers on Instagram, explaining she was already backstage getting ready when festival organizers delivered the crushing news.

“Sadly my set @WerchterBoutique tonight can’t happen due to a government mandated cancellation because of the incoming inclement weather and crowd safety concerns,” Perry wrote on Instagram.

“I was backstage at the show in the middle of hair and makeup when this news was delivered, and they gave me no choice. I am just as unhappy as you are. Unfortunately this is beyond my control, but the safety of all 55,000 of you always comes first and foremost.”

The Heatwave That Changed Everything

Belgium experienced extreme temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend as a historic heatwave swept across Europe. The World Health Organization reported that more than 1,300 excess deaths had been recorded since June 21 linked to high temperatures across the continent.

The Royal Belgian Meteorological Institute issued an orange-level warning for “intense” storms from 6 PM Saturday through 6 AM Sunday. The severe weather threat caused flooded roads and closures in several areas.

‘I Was Even Gonna Wear the Same Outfit’

The cancellation carried extra emotional weight because Perry had planned to recreate a special moment from her past. She performed at Rock Werchter in 2009 as part of her first headlining tour, the Hello Katy Tour.

“I was looking forward to being back after 17 years, I was even gonna wear the same outfit from that 2009 show again,” she shared with fans. “I am sorry I can’t change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can’t be together tonight. I love you all, and please get home safe.”

The singer posted a backstage photo showing her sitting outside in a white robe and headphones, with her unused stage costume hanging beside her. She looked dejected as she smoked a cigarette, wearing pajama pants and flip flops.

Festival Organizers Prioritize Safety

Werchter Boutique organizers released a statement explaining that the decision came after consultation with the Rock Werchter Safety Committee. The festival ended early following Pitbull’s performance, with Perry’s 90-minute closing set never taking place.

“Following consultation with the Rock Werchter Safety Committee, in which all authorities and the organization are represented, it has been decided that Werchter Boutique will end at 9pm this evening,” the statement read.

“This decision was taken in response to the weather forecast, which predicts severe thunderstorms from midnight onwards at the earliest. The governor of Flemish Brabant has also issued a be-alert in this regard.”

“By bringing the festival to a close early, we can ensure that the exit of visitors will proceed in a safe and orderly manner, allowing everyone to return home calmly. The safety and health of everyone present is always our top priority.”

The festival later confirmed that “a severe storm passed over the country” and that all festivalgoers had left the site safely.

New Music and Upcoming Shows

The cancellation came just days after Perry released her latest single “Watch It Burn” on June 25, which serves as a sister song to her November 2025 track “Bandaids.”

Perry continues her summer festival run with a performance scheduled at Depot Live in Cardiff Castle, Wales on June 30, followed by appearances at Blenheim Palace Festival and other European festivals.

The singer recently performed at the FIFA World Cup 2026 US opening ceremony in Los Angeles, where she sang “Wonder” alongside young Norwegian singer Tius.

She is also preparing to release “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris,” a concert film expected to arrive in late summer.

Fan Disappointment

Many ticket holders expressed frustration online, noting they purchased passes specifically to see the pop icon perform. The short notice gave fans just a couple of hours to adjust their plans.

Other artists scheduled to appear at the festival included Pitbull, Mika, Pommelien Thijs, James Arthur, Roxy Dekker, and Emmy d’Arc. Pitbull performed before the festival shut down, becoming the final act of the night.

The extreme weather conditions across Europe have created chaos for outdoor events, with authorities prioritizing crowd safety as temperatures continue to rise.
