Marvel boss reveals the multiverse allowed them to turn the franchise’s biggest hero into its most dangerous villain.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is bringing back its original star, but not as the character fans know best. Robert Downey Jr. , who played Tony Stark / Iron Man for over a decade, will return in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday as Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most famous villains. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly at CinemaCon 2026 to explain how this surprising casting choice came together.

Downey helped start the MCU in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie. His character Tony Stark died at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, closing his story after 11 years. But Feige revealed that Marvel never cut ties with the actor.

“He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU for obvious reasons, and we would talk about when and how and if there could be a return,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly.

The idea for Downey to play Doctor Doom came about three and a half years ago. Feige said the timing matched with Downey’s work on Oppenheimer, the Christopher Nolan film that earned him an Academy Award.

“At the time, he was on his way to winning the Academy Award for Oppenheimer and there was every story about ‘the greatest actor in the world,’ and we thought, ‘This could be it. Let’s do it,’” Feige said.

The Multiverse Made This Possible

Feige pointed to the MCU’s multiverse concept as the reason they could bring Downey back in a different role. The multiverse allows different versions of characters to exist across parallel realities.

“It’s our universe. It’s a multiverse. We can do whatever the heck we want. He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain,” Feige added.

This marks a major shift for Downey, who becomes the main antagonist for the next Avengers movies after playing the face of the superhero team for years. Avengers: Doomsday is the first of two new Avengers films, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars.

Russo Brothers Tease a Powerful New Version of Doctor Doom

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, return to direct Doomsday and Secret Wars. They also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what fans can expect from Downey’s Doctor Doom.

Anthony Russo described the character as having immense power that goes beyond anything the Avengers have faced before.

“Certainly with Doom, it’s the problem in the extreme in that his power is so immense and so beyond. But that really liberates us all on a creative level, artistic level, to figure out where the complexities and the vulnerabilities are in the character,” Anthony Russo said.

He added that even a character with unlimited physical strength can have inner weaknesses.

“They may have seemingly unlimited physical power, but there is something inside them where they are vulnerable, where they are exposed, where there are places that they need to protect even more intently than their physical selves. So I think the real fun of the storytelling is in that zone there,” he explained.

What We Know About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18, 2026 in the United States. The film will hit theaters in India on the same day, with a France release set for December 16, 2026.

The cast includes many returning Marvel stars. Confirmed actors include Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film also brings in the new Fantastic Four cast with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. X-Men actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Kelsey Grammer are also set to appear.

Downey’s Easter Post Gets Fans Talking

On Easter 2026, Downey shared an image on Instagram showing Doctor Doom holding a basket filled with decorated eggs. Each egg featured symbols of different Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, Captain America, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.

Fans quickly started sharing their thoughts online. One fan noticed there were two Spider-Man eggs in the basket, which led to questions about whether Tom Holland or Tobey Maguire would appear. Another fan commented, “Doomsday is close at hand,” while others asked if a trailer would be coming soon.

The artwork received over 400,000 likes, with many fans trying to decode every hidden clue. Some believed a Doctor Strange symbol confirmed that character’s return in the film.

Production for Avengers: Doomsday started in March 2025 and finished later that year. The first trailer was shown at CinemaCon 2026, but Doctor Doom never appears without his mask in the footage. Reports suggest audiences will not see Downey’s face as Doom until Secret Wars releases on December 15, 2027.
