As the New York Knicks stand on the brink of their first NBA championship in decades, an off-court battle has erupted between New York’s Attorney General and the San Antonio Spurs. Letitia James demanded the Spurs reverse a controversial ticketing policy ahead of Game 5 of the NBA Finals, and the internet has delivered a swift and brutal verdict.

The conflict began when the Spurs, desperate to maintain a home-court advantage while trailing 3-1 in the series, allegedly restricted ticket sales to fans living within a 150-mile radius of San Antonio. The measure, tracked via credit card billing addresses, was seen as a direct attempt to prevent the notoriously passionate (and well-traveled) Knicks fanbase from taking over the Frost Bank Center.

James Takes a Stand

Letitia James did not stay on the sidelines. On June 12, the NY AG took to X/Twitter to voice her displeasure with the policy, framing it as an attack on New Yorkers.

“My office is demanding the Spurs remove this policy and allow Knicks fans and anyone who can buy tickets for tonight’s game to be able to attend,” James wrote, adding a bold “Let’s go Knicks” to her statement.

For James, the intervention is about protecting her constituents. With the Knicks holding a 3-1 lead and millions of New Yorkers hoping to witness history in person, she argued that New York supporters should not be shut out simply because of where they live.

‘Stay in Her Lane’: The Internet Reacts

While James framed her involvement as defending New Yorkers, critics across social media were quick to question her jurisdiction.

The most popular sentiment among detractors is that the New York Attorney General has no authority over a private business in Texas. In multiple viral posts, X users mocked the audacity of a New York official trying to dictate policy in the Lone Star State.

“Demands? Who the f*** does she think she is?” one user responded, summarizing the general tone of the backlash.

Another commenter articulated the prevailing legal argument succinctly, stating: “What power does this woman think she has in Texas? She is trying to stay relevant for a future political run.”

Others felt James was focusing on the wrong crisis, with one user suggesting she should “worry about the people that are separate wrecking New York City” rather than policing San Antonio’s arena policy.

The Resolution: A Policy Reversal

Despite the social media fury, the Knicks fanbase appears to have won the battle. Amid the uproar, Ticketmaster issued a statement clarifying that fans who purchased valid tickets would be granted entry.

“Geographic restrictions on NBA Finals Game 5 tickets were set by the hosting team and applied at the time of purchase. If you bought your tickets on Ticketmaster, you have a valid, authenticated ticket that will get you in tonight,” the company announced.

Additionally, MSG Sports confirmed that after discussions with Spurs ownership, no Knicks fans would have their tickets revoked for the pivotal Game 5.

While the Spurs’ attempt to lock out New Yorkers ultimately failed, Letitia James’ aggressive intervention has added a political subplot to the Finals, leaving critics and supporters debating whether she was fighting for fairness or overstepping her authority.
