The second season of Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller Lioness wrapped up its eight-episode run on Paramount+ in December 2024. The season took the CIA’s fight against terror closer to home, with station chief Joe (Zoe Saldaña) and her team facing increasingly dangerous missions that pushed every character to their limits.
The show, which originally premiered as Special Ops: Lioness in July 2023, set a record as the most-watched worldwide series premiere on Paramount+ at the time. Season 2 arrived with high expectations and delivered eight episodes filled with intense action, personal drama, and high-stakes espionage.
The Season 2 Storyline
Season 2 picks up with Joe, Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman), and Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) enlisting a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. The season opens with a high-stakes extraction after a high-ranking government official is kidnapped by a cartel. Joe and her team travel to Texas to assist in the rescue of Congresswoman Hernandez.
The official synopsis for Season 2 reads: “As the CIA’s fight against terror moves closer to home, Joe, Kaitlyn, and Byron enlist a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. With pressure mounting from all sides, Joe is forced to confront the profound personal sacrifices she has made as the leader of the Lioness program”.
The season introduces Genesis Rodriguez as Josie Carrillo, a new operative who becomes the focus of the season’s central mission. The trailer for the season showed Joe repeatedly asking Josie if she loves her country, setting up the intense moral dilemmas that would define the season.
The eight episodes followed a weekly release schedule:
- Episode 1: Beware the Old Soldier (Oct 27, 2024) – Joe, Kyle, and the QRF team embark on a timely extraction after a cartel kidnaps a high-ranking government official
- Episode 2: I Love My Country (Oct 27, 2024) – After a new Lioness is identified, Joe and her team travel to Iraq to close the asset
- Episode 3: Along Came a Spider (Nov 3, 2024) – Kaitlyn works to drum up support for their plan while Lioness training begins for Captain Josie Carrillo
- Episode 4: Five Hundred Children (Nov 10, 2024) – Joe and Kyle make contact with a potential new source of intel
- Episode 5: Shatter the Moon (Nov 17, 2024) – A warehouse discovery rattles the team
- Episode 6: 2381 (Nov 24, 2024) – Events come to a head at the Carrillo estate
- Episode 7: The Devil Has Aces (Dec 1, 2024) – Despite Joe’s weakened state, the team is forced back to Iraq
- Episode 8: The Compass Points Home (Dec 8, 2024) – Operation Sky Hawk begins
The Season 2 Finale Explained
The finale, titled “The Compass Points Home,” delivered a chaotic and bloody conclusion to the season. The episode largely revolved around the Lioness team’s modified mission to stop two Chinese nuclear scientists, traveling in a Turkish military convoy, from reaching the Isfahan nuclear base in Iran.
Operation Sky Hawk was the name given to this dangerous mission. Joe and her team arrived at an army base in Iraq, the same one where they had previously picked up Josie. Bobby (Jill Wagner) handed out weapons to the team but was reluctant to give Joe one, as she was still recovering from earlier injuries and had been ordered to serve only in an observe-and-advise role.
Meanwhile, in San Jose, Costa Rica, Byron and Kaitlyn convinced Josie’s father Pablo to work with them. They offered him a deal: he would replace his brother Alvaro as leader of the cartel and forge a working relationship with the CIA, notifying them if any foreign enemies reached out. In exchange, he would receive protection from prosecution and the freedom that comes from being in the US. Pablo accepted the deal and killed his brother with a bullet to the skull.
Back in Iran, Josie and Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) flew a helicopter to intercept the Turkish convoy, with Cody (played by series creator Taylor Sheridan) providing sniper cover. Josie made two solid explosive passes at the convoy, but her helicopter got clipped by enemy fire and crashed, leaving Josie with a broken left leg.
The situation turned dire. Joe and the QRF team reached the crash site and exchanged heavy gunfire with Iranian forces. Tucker took a bullet to the leg, Bobby got a ricochet grazing her face, Tex was hit in the belly, and Two Cups also took a hit. As the team became outmanned and outgunned, Joe confirmed that Josie still had a pistol and told her to use it on Joe and others before they could be captured and tortured. Josie let out a loud wail as Joe whispered a “love you” to her far-away family.
Just when all hope seemed lost, close air support arrived, pelting the ground below with missiles and rail gun rounds until the threat was neutralized. Joe, Josie, and Cruz all survived. The finale ended with Joe returning home to see her husband Neal sitting on the house porch. He told her he was unsure she was coming home and reassured her she would always have her home and family.

What Comes Next: Season 3
Paramount+ officially renewed Lioness for a third season on October 1, 2025, ten months after the Season 2 finale aired. The renewal was announced nearly a year after Season 2 premiered.
Lioness Season 3 is set to premiere on Sunday, August 2, 2026, on Paramount+. The season will consist of 10 episodes, which is two more than the first two seasons. New episodes will run weekly through September, with the Season 3 finale scheduled for September 20, 2026.
The main cast will return, including Zoe Saldaña as Joe and Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn. Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, and Genesis Rodriguez are also set to return. Taylor Sheridan will write the entire season.
A teaser for Season 3 was released in June 2026, showing Saldaña back on the front lines. The new season will take the espionage thriller global as chaos ensues and the Lioness team faces its most dangerous mission to date.
