Elijah Wood just gave fans a rare look at what is coming in the next Lord of the Rings movie. The actor, famous for playing Frodo Baggins, confirmed that a recent plot leak for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is real. He shared these details while speaking at a fan convention in Vancouver.
The movie, directed by and starring Andy Serkis as Gollum, will come out on December 17, 2027. Warner Bros. moved the release date from its original December 2026 slot to give the team more time for writing and filming. The movie will start shooting in New Zealand later in 2026.
Wood Confirms Leaked Storyline During Fan Expo Vancouver
Elijah Wood attended Fan Expo Vancouver earlier in 2026. During a question-and-answer session with fans, someone asked him about The Hunt for Gollum. His answer surprised everyone in the room.
“I feel like just [recently], someone articulated what the premise of the film is… Like, the actual logline of the movie and in more detail. So, that’s cool. It’s out there in the world,” Wood said.
Wood then explained what the leaked plot actually says.
“So, it’s essentially following Gollum, and it’s a little bit of the backstory of Smeagol, and understanding a little bit more deeply where he came from… And then [the film is] tracking him with Rangers, who have been tasked to track him, because he’s got this sort of… he carries with him, as he’s tortured. We see that a little bit in Lord of the Rings, where he’s tortured, and he sort of says, ‘Shire Baggins,’ which alerts Sauron to the Shire, because otherwise, it was not a place he was ever considering looking for.”
This confirmation marks the first time anyone connected to the movie has publicly verified the story details. The leaked synopsis had been circulating online for weeks before Wood spoke about it.
The Plot Focuses on Gollum Leaving His Cave
According to the leaked synopsis that Wood confirmed, The Hunt for Gollum takes place right after the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. Bilbo Baggins has already left the Shire and taken the One Ring with him. Gollum realizes the ring is gone from his cave in the Misty Mountains.
Gandalf (Ian McKellen) fears that Gollum knows too much. Gollum knows that a “Baggins” from the Shire has the ring. If Sauron’s forces capture Gollum, they will learn where to look for the ring. So Gandalf sends a young Aragorn (called Strider) to find Gollum before the enemy does.
The movie will also show the backstory of Smeagol, the hobbit-like creature who became Gollum. Viewers will see how he found the ring and how it slowly destroyed his mind and body. This part of the story has never been shown in live-action before. Peter Jackson’s original trilogy only hinted at Smeagol’s past.
Major Cast Members Confirmed for the Movie
The full cast of The Hunt for Gollum was announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2026. The lineup mixes original trilogy stars with new faces.
Returning actors include:
- Andy Serkis as Gollum / Smeagol (also directing)
- Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey
- Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins
- Lee Pace as Thranduil (the Elvenking from The Hobbit movies)
New cast members joining the franchise are:
- Jamie Dornan as Strider (a younger version of Aragorn, replacing Viggo Mortensen)
- Kate Winslet as Marigol (an original character created for the film)
- Leo Woodall as Halvard (another new character, described as a Ranger)
Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens—the team behind the original Lord of the Rings trilogy—are producing the movie. Walsh and Boyens are also co-writing the screenplay.
Ian McKellen Was Surprised More Movies Are Being Made
Even Ian McKellen, who plays Gandalf, did not expect to return to Middle-earth. He admitted during a recent Q&A that the idea came entirely from Andy Serkis.
“I’m going back to do more Gandalf,” McKellen said. “Who would have thought there was more? The person who thought there was more was Andy Serkis, and he’s going to be directing Gollum’s early life.”
McKellen’s honest reaction shows how unexpected this movie was for everyone. The original Lord of the Rings trilogy ended in 2003. The Hobbit trilogy finished in 2014. Fans had accepted that the cinematic journey to Middle-earth was over. Now, Serkis has found a new story to tell.
The Hunt for Gollum Will Bridge Two Eras of Middle-earth
The Hunt for Gollum takes place during a specific window of time. The story starts after Bilbo’s 111th birthday party (shown at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring). It ends before the events at the Mines of Moria. This period is only briefly mentioned in Tolkien’s books and the original movies.
Philippa Boyens described the story as “quite an intense” tale that follows a chapter briefly referenced in Tolkien’s writings. The movie will show how close Sauron came to finding the ring before Frodo even left the Shire.
The film will also expand the role of the Rangers. In the original trilogy, Aragorn is introduced as a mysterious Ranger called Strider. This movie will show what the Rangers actually do—tracking dangerous creatures and protecting the borders of civilized lands.
Fans React to Wood’s Confirmation and New Casting
Social media lit up after Elijah Wood’s comments spread online. Many fans expressed excitement about seeing Smeagol’s full backstory on screen. Others shared concerns about Jamie Dornan playing Aragorn instead of Viggo Mortensen.
One user on X wrote, “Elijah Wood confirming the plot leak makes me so happy. Young Smeagol and Rangers tracking Gollum? That is exactly what I want from a prequel.” Another posted, “No Viggo as Aragorn hurts, but Jamie Dornan is a solid actor. I will give him a chance.”
Some fans also praised the addition of Kate Winslet to the cast. Winslet has never appeared in a fantasy franchise before. Her role as Marigol remains a mystery. The character’s name suggests a possible connection to flowers or nature, which fits Tolkien’s naming style.

Filming will happen in New Zealand, just like the original trilogies. Warner Bros. chose to return to the country where Peter Jackson shot all six previous films. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2026 after Andy Serkis finishes pre-production work.
The movie will be a theatrical exclusive. Warner Bros. has not announced any streaming release plans. Given the studio’s track record with big franchises, the film will likely stay in theaters for several months before moving to Max (formerly HBO Max).
