The final episode of Outlander aired on May 15, 2026, closing an eight-season journey that began over a decade ago. The show’s leads, Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, recently opened up about filming the emotional ending and why they fought to give fans a proper sendoff. The series finale, titled “And the World Was All Around Us,” left viewers with an ambiguous cliffhanger that even the actors cannot fully explain.
The pair spoke during Variety’s In Conversation With series presented by Starz, where they reflected on the weight of ending a show that has defined their careers. They also revealed that the series almost ended earlier than planned.
The Actors Almost Left After Season 7
Outlander nearly did not get its full eight-season run. Balfe and Heughan explained that their original contracts only went through season seven. When they finished filming those episodes, something felt off.
“At the time, it felt like we would have been cheating the story, wrapping it up very quickly,” Balfe said. “We wanted to honor this journey and say goodbye in the right way.”
Heughan agreed that stopping at season seven would have been wrong for the characters and the audience.
“When we got to the end of [Season] 7, it just didn’t feel satisfying,” Heughan said.
The actors pushed for more episodes. Their commitment to Outlander helped secure the final season. The showrunners and network agreed that Claire and Jamie’s story needed a proper ending. Without that extra season, the finale would have felt rushed and incomplete.
The Finale Ending Confuses Even the Cast
The series finale ends with Claire and Jamie lying next to each other on a magical stone. Claire’s hair has turned grey. Both characters have their eyes closed. Right before the credits roll, they suddenly gasp for air. The meaning of that moment is deliberately unclear.
Heughan shared his thoughts on what might be happening in that final scene.
“Are they in this realm or the next? Jamie is a ghost or another ghost, maybe it’s his younger self calling Claire to him,” Heughan said. “And if you look closely, you’ll see they’re both lying there on the magic stone, so maybe they’re in a different realm.”
Balfe admitted that she also does not have a clear answer. She said every viewer will see the ending differently based on their own feelings about the characters.
“Every single person has their own idea about what, perhaps, should happen,” Balfe said. “And as people who were on the show from the very beginning and lived and breathed these characters, you have your [own] desire.”
Heughan joked about his own experience filming the death scene.
“I couldn’t tell you what the ending means,” Heughan added. “But I felt once I died, my job was done.”
The ambiguous ending has sparked thousands of fan discussions online since the episode aired. Viewers continue to debate whether Claire and Jamie died together, crossed into a different timeline, or somehow survived.
Balfe Broke Down During Final Filming Days
Saying goodbye to Outlander was not easy for either actor. The final days of filming in Scotland brought out deep emotions, especially for Balfe. She recalled one moment when the stress and sadness became too much.
“It was almost the end of the shoot. I remember Sam being really sweet because I had an absolute breakdown on one of the days. I was in bits!” Balfe said.
Heughan stepped in to support his co-star during that difficult moment. Their bond, built over 12 years of working together, helped them get through the emotional ending.
Heughan pointed to the final montage as the most meaningful part of the last episode for him. That sequence shows Claire and Jamie’s love story across all eight seasons, bringing back moments and characters from the entire run of the show.
“We get to see all of the wonderful moments that we’ve had on the show and all the great characters,” Heughan said. “There’s lots of goodbyes to every character, and each character gets their moment. The series as a whole is our legacy.”
The Cast Remains Close After the Show Ends
Balfe and Heughan first met in 2013. They took a walk in Hyde Park in London before filming began on season one. During that walk, they made a promise to each other.
“We said at that time, ‘Look, we don’t know what this is going to be, but no one else is going to have the same experience as you and I are going to have,’ ” Balfe recalled. “I think that that bond will sustain us for the rest of our lives, because no one else will have had this experience in the same way that we’ve had.”
Heughan said the show completely changed his life.
“It’s changed our lives completely,” Heughan said.
The two actors continue to see each other regularly after the show ended. Balfe said they actually spend more time together now than they did during filming.
“I think our friendship is now… I don’t know, maybe you take it for granted, because you are seeing each other all the time, so then you don’t make the effort to see each other outside of work as much,” she said. “But now we have to make the effort to see each other, and we have, and we do.”
Heughan noted that the entire cast stays in touch. They meet up in groups whenever possible.
“For all the cast as well, it’s been so nice seeing them more occasionally, meeting up in groups of us — there’s quite a few of us — and it’s so nice,” Heughan said. “There’s a great rapport and a great camaraderie there.”
What They Will Miss Most About Working Together
When asked what they will miss the most, both actors pointed to their shared sense of humor. The show covered difficult and dark topics over its eight seasons. Having someone to laugh with made those hard days bearable.
“I think we’re very different people, but we have a very similar funny bone,” Balfe said. “The same things crack us up.”
She praised Heughan as easy to work with and generous.
“There’s no ego with him on set,” Balfe said.
Heughan said that even during the toughest moments, Balfe’s humor kept things light.
“We had a lot of fun, and there were some tough days and hard subject matter, but there was always a good sense of humor,” Heughan said.
The small daily routines are what Heughan misses the most.
“In the morning, in the trailer, you rock up, and you’re tired, and we just sit there, and we have a coffee and talk s—,” Heughan admitted. “And then run some lines and then probably [talk] more s—.”
“It was lovely, it was a nice way to start your day,” he said.
