The Yellowstone universe keeps growing, and its stars are ready to stay for the long run.Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, just shared that he is signed on to play the character for years to come. As the first season of his spin-off show Marshals continues, Grimes made it clear he has no plans to leave the franchise anytime soon.
The actor spoke openly about his future with the Western drama that made him a household name. While some actors get tired of playing the same role, Grimes feels the exact opposite about Kayce Dutton.
“I mean, I’ve signed a contract, so I have to do it as long as people kind of watch it for the next, however, many years. But if there was ever a character that I was going to play for 10 years or more, this is the one.” – Luke Grimes
Grimes Calls Kayce Dutton the Role He Dreamed of as a Kid
Grimes did not just take this job for a paycheck. He admitted that playing Kayce Dutton feels like a dream come true. The actor remembered reading the script back in 2017 and feeling that he had to land this part.
He told reporters that if he had missed out on playing Kayce, it would have been the biggest heartbreak of his career. Now that he has the role, he does not take a single day for granted. Grimes knows that playing a cowboy in the mountains is exactly what he wanted to do as a young actor growing up.

Of course, the work is not always easy. Grimes joked that sometimes he stops and thinks about how many more years he has to go. The schedule is packed, and the show demands a lot from its cast. But then he remembers that he gets to be Kayce, and suddenly all the hard work feels worth it.
‘Marshals’ Season 2 Already Confirmed as First Season Airs
Marshals premiered on March 1, 2026, on CBS. New episodes drop every Sunday night. For those who miss the live broadcast, each episode arrives on Paramount+ the following Monday. The first season runs for 13 episodes.
The show picks up after the events of Yellowstone. Kayce leaves his ranching life behind to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. His background as a Navy SEAL and his skills as a cowboy make him perfect for the job. The team tracks down criminals across Montana, and each episode brings a new case.
Paramount has already given the green light for Marshals season 2. The show broke records with its premiere numbers, so the network moved quickly to lock in more episodes. Grimes will be busy filming for the foreseeable future.

More Yellowstone Spin-Offs Are Coming in 2026
Grimes is not the only original Yellowstone star returning to the screen. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are filming The Dutton Ranch, which follows Beth and Rip after the main series ended. That show does not have a release date yet, but it should arrive later in 2026.
Another spin-off called The Madison premiered on March 14, 2026, on Paramount+. Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell lead that series about a New York City family moving to Montana after a tragedy. The show already has a second season finished and ready to go for 2027.
Fans of the original Yellowstone will also see familiar faces on Marshals. Gil Birmingham returns as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty is back as his right-hand man. Brecken Merrill also returns as Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son. The first episode revealed that Kayce’s wife Monica passed away from cancer, which pushes him to take the Marshal job.
Luke Grimes Finds Out Show Secrets by Accident
Even though Grimes plays a lead role in the Yellowstone universe, he does not always know what creator Taylor Sheridan has planned. The actor shared that he only learns new details when he happens to be at Sheridan’s house.
Sheridan likes to use speakerphone for calls, so Grimes sometimes overhears information directly from the source. That means fans might not be the only ones waiting to see what happens next. Grimes finds out some surprises right alongside the audience.
The actor also hinted that crossovers between the different Yellowstone shows could happen. His contract and the contracts of other actors include clauses that let them appear in any Yellowstone series. Nothing has been set up yet, but the door remains open for characters from The Madison or The Dutton Ranch to show up on Marshals.
