Maria Sten is stepping out of Jack Reacher’s shadow and into the spotlight, and she is not shying away from the weight that comes with it. The Danish-Congolese actress returns as Frances Neagley in the new Prime Video spin-off Neagley, which launched all eight episodes on September 16, 2026, right after the Reacher season four finale. In a series of candid interviews, Sten has opened up about the pressure of leading her own show, the responsibility she feels as a Black woman headlining a major action series, and the unique challenges of bringing Neagley’s deeply personal story to life.
Maria Sten Says the Pressure Feels Like a Shared Burden
Maria Sten has been honest about the emotional weight of carrying her own series. Speaking to Indy100, she admitted that the opportunity comes with a rare kind of pressure, especially because roles like this are still not common for actors who look like her.
“I want more of it. I crave seeing people who look like me leading movies and occupying space not because it’s written that way but just as people existing in the world, interesting characters existing in the world and I do feel the pressure somehow because I feel like that is rare that, that happens and somehow it feels like ok if I win we all win and if I tank we all tank”
She added that if the show does not work, it can feel like a loss for everyone, not just for her. That sense of collective responsibility has shaped how she approaches the role. In an earlier conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she described the experience as both exciting and intimidating.
“It’s very exciting to be given this opportunity, but of course there’s also a lot of pressure”
Sten also spoke with ComicBook.com about the challenge of honoring the existing fan base while expanding the universe.
“I feel that I was very ready for it in a way. Of course it’s humbling, and there’s a lot of pressure, especially because the show is such a huge success and you want to be able to do it justice and honor it”
Neagley Steps Into Her Own Story in Chicago
The spin-off places Frances Neagley in Chicago, where she works as a private investigator. The story begins when a childhood friend named Tommy dies in what appears to be a suspicious accident. Neagley refuses to accept the death as an accident and starts digging for answers, which pulls her into a dangerous conspiracy involving a cult. The series explores her past in ways the main Reacher show never could, including her childhood and her complicated relationship with her ex-cop father.
Sten explained that while Neagley is comfortable stepping into other people’s worlds and being the hero, she is not used to letting people into her own world. In an interview with The AU Review, she said:
“She is very comfortable stepping into other people’s worlds and sort of showing up to be the hero, but she’s not very comfortable with people stepping into her world. Reacher is sort of the only person who’s got the magic check mark next to his name”
The spin-off also introduces a new supporting cast, including Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Jasper Jones as Keno, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole. Alan Ritchson returns as Jack Reacher in a guest role, appearing in the opening action scene where he reunites with Neagley.
Alan Ritchson Gave Maria Sten One Key Piece of Advice
Working with Alan Ritchson again felt familiar for Sten. She described his guest appearance as “surreal” but said their working relationship made it feel like old times. Ritchson also shared practical advice about the physical demands of leading an action series. Sten, who prefers to do her own stunts, recalled his warning:
“There was one scene — this is back when we were doing Reacher season two, maybe — we were doing this fight. I am also very stubborn; I want to do everything myself, and he’s like, ‘No, no, save yourself, because you’re going to be doing it 47,000 times, so when the camera’s on the back of your head, maybe once in a while you should let the stunt double do it’”
She also described the dynamic between the two characters in a memorable way, calling Reacher a “silverback gorilla” and Neagley a “mountain lion”.
Haphephobia and the Emotional Depth of Neagley
One of the most personal aspects of Neagley is her haphephobia, an intense fear of being touched. Sten worked carefully to portray this condition authentically, which adds another layer to a character who often appears stoic and self-sufficient. She told Indy100 that the series peels back the layers of Neagley “like an onion,” exploring the experiences that shaped her.
Sten also explained that Neagley is more emotional than Reacher, partly because of who she is as a person. In a conversation with Radio Times, she said:
“I think Neagley is probably more emotional than Reacher is as well due to the nature of who Neagley is versus who Reacher is”
The show honors the tradition of the Reacher series by opening with a sinister act in the first minutes, followed by Neagley and her team working to bring justice to those responsible.
What Critics and Audiences Are Saying About Neagley
Early reactions to Neagley have been strong. The series holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.6/10 rating on IMDb from over a thousand viewers as of mid-September 2026. Sten credited the writers and showrunners for making the most of the friendship between Reacher and Neagley without relying on his constant presence.
“What is lovely is that, of course, Reacher and Neagley can stand on their own, but you can still get the best of both worlds in Neagley”
The series was created by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, based on the character created by Lee Child. At San Diego Comic-Con, Sten also revealed that Lee Child and author Yasmin Angoe will debut the first-ever novel based on Neagley, titled Zero Margin.
