Marvel Studios is keeping its Special Presentations format alive and well. After the success of Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the studio is doubling down on these hour-long standalone stories. The Punisher: One Last Kill arrived on Disney+ on May 12, 2026, and a sequel to Werewolf by Night is officially in the works. These projects prove that Marvel sees value in telling tight, focused stories outside of its movie and series slate.
The Special Presentations format launched in 2022 as a way for Marvel to experiment with tone, style, and characters without committing to a full series or feature film. Werewolf by Night paid tribute to classic black-and-white horror movies. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special delivered pure seasonal fun. Both projects were well received by fans and critics. Now Marvel is expanding the lineup with darker, more adult content.
The Punisher Returns in a Gritty One-Hour Special
Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle in The Punisher: One Last Kill. The special premiered on Disney+ on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Bernthal co-wrote the script with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. The story takes place several years after Netflix canceled The Punisher following its second season in 2019. Those Netflix shows are now fully canon within the MCU.
The official logline says Frank Castle struggles to cope with everything he has lost. His dark past continues to haunt him. His attempts to find peace fail after an unexpected incident forces him to use his deadly skills again. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, described the special to Entertainment Weekly as “a shotgun blast of a story” that still carries all the emotion fans expect from a Frank Castle story.
Bernthal reportedly came up with the idea while filming Daredevil: Born Again. He told Entertainment Weekly that the ending of that show’s first season opened the door for him to tell more stories about his character. He did not want Marvel to just hand him the opportunity. He went through the process of pitching the idea himself. He called the special “a visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred version of Frank where he’s going to turn his back to the audience.”
Werewolf by Night Sequel Is Finally Happening
Director Michael Giacchino confirmed that a sequel to Werewolf by Night is officially in the works. He made the announcement at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film panel in late 2025. Giacchino will return to direct the follow-up to the 2022 black-and-white Halloween special that introduced Jack Russell (played by Gael García Bernal), Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), and Man-Thing (Carey Jones).
The original Werewolf by Night earned a 90% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and became one of the standout releases of MCU Phase 4. Giacchino joked about the special during the panel, saying, “If you haven’t seen it, watch it. It’s on Disney+ if you still have that.” Fans have been waiting for an update on the characters’ return for years. Giacchino previously confirmed that discussions about doing more had taken place. Now those discussions have turned into an actual project.
Nova Could Be the Next Character to Get the Special Presentation Treatment
Rumors are circulating that Nova, the long-discussed MCU project, might arrive as a Special Presentation instead of a full TV series. Marvel previously paused development on several potential shows, including Nova, as the studio recalibrated its television strategy. Turning Nova into a one-hour special would allow Marvel to bring the character to the screen without the commitment of a multi-episode series.

This format is perfect for darker characters like The Punisher. A full series about Frank Castle might be too violent or too niche for a broad audience. A one-hour special is easier to digest.
