The wait for a new Masters of the Universe movie is finally ending. Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films are bringing the classic 1980s franchise back to the big screen with a modern live-action version. The project has been in the works for years, going through different studios and creative teams, but now it has a clear path to theaters with a major release planned for summer 2026. The new trailer gives fans their best look yet at Eternia, He-Man, and the villainous Skeletor.

The Story Behind the New He-Man Movie

The official plot for Masters of the Universe follows a young Prince Adam who crashes to Earth as a 10-year-old boy, separated from his magical Sword of Power and his home planet of Eternia. After 15 years away, he tracks down the sword, which pulls him back across space to his home world. When he returns, he finds Eternia in ruins under the control of the evil Skeletor. To save his family and his people, Adam must accept his destiny and become He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. He gets help from his allies Teela and Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms, to fight back against Skeletor and his forces.

Who Plays He-Man and Skeletor in the Cast

The cast of Masters of the Universe features a mix of rising stars and well-known actors. Nicholas Galitzine, who starred in The Idea of You and Purple Hearts, takes on the lead role of Prince Adam and his heroic alter-ego He-Man. To prepare for the part, Galitzine followed an intense training program, eating around 4,000 calories a day and doing months of sword work to get ready for the action scenes.

Jared Leto plays the main villain Skeletor, the skull-faced warlord who rules Eternia with an iron fist. The supporting cast includes Camila Mendes as Teela, the Captain of the Royal Guard and Adam’s closest ally. Idris Elba joins as Duncan, the weapons master known as Man-At-Arms who becomes a mentor to Adam.

Other major cast members include Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Skeletor’s second in command and a powerful sorceress. Morena Baccarin plays The Sorceress, who guards the secrets of Castle Grayskull. James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley take on the roles of King Randor and Queen Marlena, Adam’s parents. Kristen Wiig provides the voice for Roboto, the mechanical warrior. Additional cast members include Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man, and Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw.

What the New Trailer Reveals

The second official trailer for Masters of the Universe dropped on March 30, 2026, showing much more of the film’s action and story. The trailer gives fans a good look at the world of Eternia, showing its cosmic landscapes and the dark rule of Skeletor. Viewers see Galitzine wielding the Sword of Power and transforming into He-Man, as well as Leto’s Skeletor leading his army of evil warriors.

The trailer focuses on the main conflict, showing Adam’s return to a world he barely recognizes. His homeland has been shattered during his 15 years away, and he must quickly learn to use his powers to fight back. The action sequences show large-scale battles between the forces of good and evil, with practical effects mixed with visual effects to bring the world to life.

Release Date and Where to Watch

Masters of the Universe is scheduled to open in theaters on June 5, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios will handle the U.S. and Canadian release, while Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute the film in other countries around the world. The movie will be released exclusively in theaters, giving audiences the chance to see the epic fantasy action on the biggest screens possible.

Behind the Scenes Production Details

Travis Knight directs Masters of the Universe. Knight previously made Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, earning praise for his work on both live-action and animated films. The script comes from Chris Butler, who also wrote and directed ParaNorman and Missing Link. The production budget is close to $180 million, making it the biggest collaboration between Mattel Films and Amazon MGM Studios to date.

Filming took place in London, with principal photography starting in January 2025 and wrapping in June 2025. The visual effects team includes major studios like ILM, DNEG, and Cinesite, working to bring the fantasy world of Eternia to the screen.

Long Journey to the Big Screen

The new Masters of the Universe movie has had a difficult road to production. The project was originally set up at Netflix, but the streaming service dropped it in 2023 due to budget concerns. Before that, it had been in development at Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures. When Netflix cut ties, the project lost directors Adam and Aaron Nee as well as lead actor Kyle Allen. Amazon MGM Studios picked up the rights and brought in Travis Knight to direct, with Nicholas Galitzine taking over the role of He-Man.

Despite the delays and changes, the film is now complete and ready for its summer release. Mattel Studios hopes the movie will start a new franchise based on the classic toy line, following the pattern of other successful toy-based films in recent years.
