The second season of Matlock just finished its run on CBS in April 2026, wrapping up the big Wellbrexa case that drove the story since the show began. But when the series returns for Matlock Season 3, things will look very different. The show is moving to a midseason schedule, and creator Jennie Snyder Urman has confirmed the story will jump forward in time. Instead of picking up right after the finale events, the new season will skip ahead several months. Here is everything Urman shared about what fans can expect from Matlock Season 3.
Matlock Season 3 Time Jump Will Skip Six to Nine Months Forward
Urman spoke with multiple outlets right after the season 2 finale aired. She made it clear that Matlock Season 3 will not start where the last episode ended.
“We’re not going to pick up directly [after the Season 2 finale]. It’ll be six months to a year, I would say.” โ Jennie Snyder Urman
In a separate interview, she gave a slightly tighter estimate. “It’ll be a little time jump: six to nine months, something like that,” she said. “Not like five years later and everything has changed. But we’re not a direct pickup, like we were this year.”
This means when viewers see Kathy Bates as Madeline โMattyโ Matlock again, her life and those around her will have already settled into a new normal. The finale set up a major change, with Matty and Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) leaving the old firm to start their own practice. The time jump allows the show to skip the messy setup phase and get right into the new dynamics.
Why the Show is Doing a Complete Creative Reset
The decision to add a time jump is tied to a bigger plan. Urman confirmed that season 2 was designed to end the Wellbrexa storyline completely. That story about the opioid cover-up was the main mystery from the very first episode. With that chapter closed, the creative team needs time to build something new.
“I just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on thisโฆ we didn’t want to keep dragging out the same story.” โ Jennie Snyder Urman
Urman described the upcoming Matlock Season 3 as a โcreative reboot.โ She explained that she does not like repeating patterns and always wants to push the story forward. The show will still have a โcase of the week.โ But the long-running mystery, the relationships between characters, and even Mattyโs identity will all have fresh elements.
A handful of characters now know the truth about who Matty really is. The time jump lets the writers show how those relationships have evolved off-screen. Viewers will see everyone in โdifferent placesโ compared to the season 2 finale.
Matlock Season 3 Release Date Shift: Why Fans Have to Wait Until 2027
The time jump is not the only big change. Matlock Season 3 is also moving its release schedule. The first two seasons aired in the fall. The new season will now premiere at midseason, which means fans will likely see new episodes starting in January 2027.
Urman admitted she personally asked the network for this change. She explained that she needs the extra time to design the next mystery properly. After closing out the Wellbrexa case so completely, the writers must build a new โarchitectureโ for the show to stand on.
“Sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it’s airtight.” โ Jennie Snyder Urman
She also said she feels โlucky that the networkโs giving us time to get it right because I donโt want the quality to drop.โ CBS announced its schedule on April 15, 2026, confirming that Matlock would move to midseason. The show Elsbeth will take over its previous time slot.

What to Expect When Matlock Season 3 Returns
So what will actually happen when the show comes back? Urman shared a few specific details. She confirmed that viewers will pick up with Matty and Olympia in a new office. They are moving forward with their new firm after leaving Jacobson Moore.
The relationship between Olympia and Edwin (Langston) will also have progressed. Urman shared that she wants to bring Langston back and pick up his story with Olympia at a different place. She hinted that they will โhave definitely seen each otherโ during the time jump, so their dynamic will already be changed.
Jason Ritter returns as Julian, who got arrested in the finale. Beau Bridges as Senior also faces consequences for his role in the scandal. The time jump will show where they stand after the initial fallout settles.
The first two seasons of Matlock are currently streaming on Paramount+. The series also stars Leah Lewis and is produced by Sutton Street Productions, Cloud Nine Productions, and CBS Studios. Matlock Season 3 is scheduled to return on CBS in midseason 2027, approximately six to nine months after the events of the season 2 finale.
