The director of the Minions franchise, Pierre Coffin, has shared his thoughts on where the series could go next. He recently gave an interview about the upcoming film, Minions and Monsters. The movie marks a major creative shift for the series. Coffin suggested that this new direction opens up many possibilities for future stories, including space adventures.
Director Explains New Direction for Minions and Monsters
Minions and Monsters is the third standalone movie in the Minions series. It is also the seventh film overall in the Despicable Me franchise. The film will premiere in theaters on July 1, 2026.
“This movie sort of opens up, ‘Oh, let’s make a movie that’s happening, like, in the future, or in space, and it feels like everything is possible from this moment on, provided the movie is a success.”
The film is a period piece set in 1920s Hollywood. The story follows the Minions as they try to make their own monster movie during the Golden Age of cinema. Pierre Coffin, who voices the Minions and directed the film, said this setting was a major reason he returned to the franchise. He also wanted to do something different from the previous films. This creative risk is a big gamble for the franchise. The film does not include Steve Carell’s character, Gru, which is a first for the series.
New Characters and Voices Join the Minions Movie
Minions and Monsters introduces several new characters to the franchise. The story focuses on three new Minions named James, Henry, and Ed. This gives other yellow sidekicks a chance to take the spotlight. It also sets a precedent for future films that could feature new groups of Minions. The voice cast also includes several well-known actors. Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr are all part of the film. Pierre Coffin returns to voice the Minions. Patrick Delage is the co-director.
Historical Setting Inspired the Films Look and Feel
The director explained why he chose the 1920s for the new film. He said the period offered more than just vintage style. The era was a time of rapid social and cultural change. This included Prohibition and women fighting for their rights. Coffin felt this gave the story a richer background. The film also pays tribute to the early days of the film industry. It draws inspiration from silent-era greats like Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd.
“The twenties were fascinating because movies were changing, but so was the world around them. There is the excitement of the studios, but there is also everything happening outside them.”
