The much-awaited big-screen adaptation of the popular crime series has cleared the censor board with hardly any modifications, keeping its raw and intense nature intact for audiences.
Mirzapur: The Movie has received its certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) just days before its theatrical release on September 4, 2026. The film has been awarded an ‘A’ certificate, restricting it to adult viewers, and comes with a final runtime of 197 minutes and 19 seconds, which translates to 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds.
A source close to the production confirmed that the film was cleared with “hardly any modifications,” retaining all the raw elements the filmmakers intended. The source added:
“This means audiences will get to experience the much-awaited theatrical adaptation exactly the way the makers intended it to be seen, retaining its raw, unfiltered essence on the big screen.”
CBFC Modifications and Cuts Explained
The censor board did request several changes before issuing the certificate, but these were limited in scope. According to certification reports, the CBFC asked the makers to:
- Mute cuss words at four different places
- Replace abusive language with appropriate words at six instances
- Modify the dialogue “Galey se lag gar”
- Replace a word in the first half with “kamar”
- Change the word “lanth” (meaning idiot) in the second half
- Modify a caste reference following the board’s direction
The board also instructed the makers to tone down two intimate sequences by 50 percent through changes to both visuals and sound. One sequence appears before the interval, while the other occurs in the second half. In total, approximately 35 seconds of intimate content was removed from the film.
Notably, the CBFC did not ask for any cuts to the film’s violent or graphic portions. The intense crime-based narrative and gritty action sequences remain completely untouched, preserving the signature style that made the series popular.
Source Clarifies Minimal Changes
Despite reports about the 35-second trim, a source close to the production has disputed the suggestion that the film underwent significant cuts. The source maintained that there were no cuts to the film and that the modifications were limited. The theatrical version was cleared with “hardly any modifications,” and the changes did not interfere with the filmmakers’ vision.
Pankaj Tripathi on Theatrical Experience
Pankaj Tripathi, who returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, shared his thoughts on how watching the film in cinemas will be different from streaming it at home. He said:
“Whenever a performance or art form is experienced communally, the impact changes entirely. Enjoying it in a group creates a unique, shared experience. So, while Mirzapur used to be a ‘leave me alone’ kind of watch, it’s now in ‘party mode.’ The world is the same, the characters are the same, but the story is new, and the experience is much grander.”

Mirzapur: The Movie brings back several familiar faces from the streaming series. The cast includes:

- Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit
- Divyenndu as Munna Bhaiya
- Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi
- Shweta Tripathi as Golu
- Shriya Pilgaonkar as Sweety
- Harshita Gaur as Dimpy
New additions to the cast include Jitendra Kumar, who takes over the role of Bablu Pandit previously played by Vikrant Massey, and Ravi Kishan joining in a new role. The ensemble also features Abhishek Banerjee, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. It is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner, in association with Amazon MGM Studios. Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serve as co-producers.
