The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters just wrapped up on April 30, 2026, and the ending has set the internet on fire. The finale showed Kurt Russell’s character, Colonel Lee Shaw, tracking down the massive flying Titan Rodan, who was wide awake and sitting on a volcano.
Now that the season is over, Apple TV+ has not yet given the green light for a third season. But the show’s loyal fanbase is already looking ahead. The biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether the series will finally deliver a fight the Monsterverse has teased for years: Godzilla vs. Rodan.
Rodan’s Return Sparks Wild Fan Theories for Season 3
The appearance of Rodan in the season 2 finale is a huge deal for the series. In the timeline of the Monsterverse, the show is currently set in the year 2017. This is two years before the events of the movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), where Rodan plays a major role.

Because the show is filling in the gaps between the movies, fans believe that a potential third season could focus entirely on Rodan. Viewers are already flocking to social media to demand one specific scenario: a proper clash between the fire demon and the King of the Monsters.
On the r/Monsterverse subreddit, the most upvoted requests for a new season revolve around seeing Godzilla and Rodan finally throw down. One user, Godzilla2000Zero, noted that this specific fight has never actually happened in this version of the universe.
Another fan, paleosols2021, described exactly what they want to see:
I wanna see Rodan blitz Godzilla. If we could get some cool scenes where he clotheslines Goji or grabs him with his talons and drags him, I think that’d be super cool.

Will the Show Introduce a Second Rodan?
Besides the fighting, there is another major mystery coming out of the season 2 finale that fans are debating heavily. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan is found sleeping inside a volcano in Mexico. However, in the Monarch season 2 finale, Shaw finds Rodan at a volcano in Thailand.
This has led to a popular theory that there might actually be two Rodans in the Monsterverse.
According to Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty, the Rodan in the movie was born in the Mexican volcano where his parents nested. If that is true, the Rodan waking up in Thailand in 2017 might be a different creature entirely—possibly a mate.
This would be a direct callback to the original 1956 Toho film Rodan, which featured two of the winged creatures. If Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 3 happens, it might explore the idea that there are more Titans out there than we ever realized.

Release Timeline and the Prequel Spinoff
As of May 2026, Apple has not officially canceled or renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a third season. The entertainment industry is waiting to see how many people watch season 2 before making a final decision.

While fans wait for news on season 3, Apple TV+ is moving forward with the franchise in another way. A prequel series focusing on a younger Lee Shaw (played by Wyatt Russell) has already been greenlit. That story will take place in 1984 during the Cold War.

However, this prequel is a separate project. Producer Tory Tunnell has hinted that the team is ready for the next chapter of the main story, telling Polygon that they are prepared for the “next adventure”. If season 3 gets the green light soon, industry experts suggest viewers might not see it until 2028, following the production schedule of the previous seasons.
The second season ended with Lee Shaw tracking Kentaro Randa and Isabel Simmons to a remote jungle. When Shaw arrives, he finds a volcanic nest, and the final shot is the reveal of Rodan in all its glory.
If the show returns, season 3 will likely bridge the gap between 2017 and the King of the Monsters storyline, explaining how Rodan ends up in Mexico and how Apex Cybernetics continues its secret research. For now, fans can only re-watch the finale and hope Apple gives them the Godzilla vs. Rodan battle they have been asking for.
