The 34-year-old South Korean singer and actress Nana, whose real name is Im Jin-ah, is facing a shocking countersuit from the man who broke into her home and assaulted her and her mother last November. The suspect, a man in his 30s, has filed a legal complaint accusing Nana of attempted murder and aggravated assault. This legal action comes after the police had already concluded their investigation, deciding that Nana and her mother acted in justified self-defense during the terrifying home invasion.
The Details of the November Home Invasion
The incident occurred in the early morning of November 15, 2025, at Nana’s residence in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. According to police reports, the suspect used a ladder to climb up to the apartment’s balcony and entered through an unlocked door. Once inside, he confronted Nana’s mother, threatened her with a weapon, and demanded money. The altercation turned physically violent, with the suspect choking Nana’s mother, causing her to lose consciousness and later require hospital treatment.
Nana, who was asleep, woke up to her mother’s screams. She rushed to help, leading to a physical struggle with the intruder. Nana and her mother managed to subdue and restrain the man before calling the police. During the struggle, both Nana and her mother sustained injuries. The intruder also suffered an injury, described as an open wound to his jaw, which reports indicate was likely caused by the knife he was carrying. The suspect was arrested at the scene on charges of aggravated robbery and assault.
Police Investigation Concluded as Self-Defense
Following a thorough investigation, the Guri Police Station determined that Nana and her mother’s actions were lawful. In late November, police announced they would not be pressing any charges against Nana, stating her actions fell within the legal boundaries of self-defense. A police official explained that after a comprehensive review, they found a real threat to the victims and that the level of force used to defend themselves was reasonable and did not inflict serious injury on the suspect. The police decision was based on Article 21, Clause 1 of South Korea’s Criminal Act, which states that acts committed to protect oneself or others from an immediate and unjust danger are lawful if deemed reasonable.
The Intruder’s Countersuit and Changing Story
Despite initially acknowledging his crimes, the suspect later changed his statement during police investigations. He claimed he “did not possess a weapon at the time of the crime or inflict injuries on the victims”. Then, in a recent legal move, he filed a separate civil complaint against Nana, accusing her of attempted murder and causing him special injury during the struggle to subdue him.
Nana’s agency, Sublime, confirmed the shocking countersuit in an official statement on January 2, 2026. The agency strongly condemned the suspect’s actions, calling them an “inhumane act” that is causing secondary harm to Nana and her family.
The suspect, who was armed with a weapon, inflicted severe physical and emotional harm on Nana and her family. Despite this, he is exploiting the fact that Nana is a public figure to file a separate lawsuit with no remorse, causing a second round of harm.
Sublime stated that the perpetrator is exploiting Nana’s status as a celebrity and vowed to pursue all possible civil and criminal legal measures against him in response.
Nana’s Personal Response to Supporters
Following the news, Nana personally addressed her fans on social media on January 2 to share her feelings and reassure them. She wrote that she had known about the countersuit for a while and learned of it during a period when she was already working through the mental trauma of the original attack.
She described feeling shaken and working hard to steady her mind, especially because she was determined to keep her promise to fans and attend a scheduled fan signing event. Nana expressed that meeting her fans at that event was a source of great happiness and strength for her. She admitted the situation made her question her trusting nature but resolved to face it with strength.
“I will not collapse. I will steady myself so I do not waver. So please do not worry too much. I will make sure this matter is set right, so please do not worry and trust me.”
Nana asked her supporters to view her resolve positively, as a sign of her growth.

Legal Process and Public Reaction
While the police have closed their criminal investigation into Nana’s actions, the legal process continues because a formal complaint has been filed by the suspect. Police have stated they will process the new complaint according to standard procedure. The suspect remains on trial for the original charges of aggravated robbery and assault.
Public reaction, particularly on international social media and forums, has expressed widespread disbelief and support for Nana. Many comments question the legal logic that allows someone injured while committing a violent crime to sue their victim. The case has sparked discussions about victims’ rights and self-defense laws.
