Neve Campbell is officially coming back as Sidney Prescott in Scream 8. The actress confirmed the news herself in a short but clear statement, ending months of speculation about whether the franchise’s original final girl would face Ghostface one more time.

Campbell shared the update while speaking to the Associated Press about her upcoming projects. She listed Scream 8 alongside two television shows she is developing. When asked for details about the film, she laughed and kept it simple.

“You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8. I’ll be in it.”

That one line is enough for horror fans. Campbell has played Sidney in six of the seven Scream films since the original arrived in 1996. She sat out Scream VI in 2023 over a pay dispute, then returned for Scream 7 in February 2026 — a film that became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise’s history.

Sidney Prescott’s Story So Far: From Woodsboro Teen to Protective Mother

Understanding why Campbell’s return matters requires looking at how Sidney has changed across three decades of films. She started as a high school student in Woodsboro, California, still grieving the brutal murder of her mother, Maureen Prescott. The first Ghostface killings hit on the anniversary of that death, and Sidney was the main target from the very first phone call.

The original Scream revealed that her boyfriend Billy Loomis and his friend Stu Macher were the killers. Their motive traced back to Maureen’s affair with Billy’s father. Sidney survived, fought back, and killed both attackers.

Scream 2 put her in college, dealing with copycat killers and fresh trauma. Scream 3 took her into hiding in the woods, far from Hollywood and the movie-within-a-movie chaos. Scream 4 brought her back to Woodsboro to promote a self-help book, only for her own cousin Jill Roberts to be unmasked as the killer. Sidney survived again.

The 2022 Scream — the fifth film — pulled Sidney back into the action alongside Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley as a new generation of teens faced Ghostface. Campbell’s role was smaller, but her presence anchored the film to its past. Scream VI moved the story to New York City without Sidney. The film explained she had gone into hiding to keep her family safe.

Then came Scream 7. Sidney was no longer a teenager running from a masked killer. She was Sidney Prescott-Evans, married to police officer Mark Evans (Joel McHale), running a coffeehouse in Pine Grove, Indiana, and raising three daughters. Her eldest, Tatum (Isabel May), was named after her late best friend Tatum Riley, who died in the original film.

Ghostface found her anyway. Scream 7 put Tatum in the killer’s path, forcing Sidney into the fight of her life as a mother rather than a survivor. Campbell spoke about what that shift meant for the character.

“She has gone through tremendous hardship since then, but she’s a survivor, not a victim. That is what I think people find admirable in her. She’s finally found happiness. She’s created a family, has children, and has motherhood. She’s found peace. And then, of course, chaos finds her.”

What Scream 7 Set Up for Sidney and Her Family

Scream 7 ended with Sidney, Tatum, and Mark all alive. The film’s killers — Jessica and Marco — were stopped. Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) also survived, escaping Ghostface’s final attack alongside Sidney’s family and the Meeks-Martin siblings, Mindy and Chad.

That ending leaves Sidney in a very different place than she was after previous films. She has a family to protect, a community she chose, and a life she built away from Woodsboro. Scream 8 will pick up with a Sidney who has already lost pieces of that peace once and knows how quickly it can be taken away.

Campbell described Sidney’s relationship with Tatum as central to Scream 7 and said working with Isabel May brought a new layer to the role. She also noted that Sidney and Gale grew closer in the seventh film, moving past their long-running love-hate dynamic.

The Writing Team Behind Scream 8

Scream 8 is being written by sisters Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman, according to multiple industry reports. The pair are best known as showrunners of the Peacock series Poker Face. Their other credits include writing and co-executive producing work on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son.

The Zuckerman sisters were hired in March 2026, shortly after Scream 7 crossed the $200 million mark at the global box office. Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures moved quickly to keep the franchise going.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream and directed Scream 7, will not return to direct the eighth film. He told Hello Sidney that he wants to focus on other projects and will “probably step back and just be a part of the family again”.

Director Search and the Soska Sisters Rumor

Scream 8 does not have a confirmed director yet. A Production Weekly listing in late 2026 named Canadian filmmakers Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska — known as the Soska Sisters — as attached to direct. The listing also named Campbell as attached to star.

The Soska Sisters have directed films including American Mary (2012) and Festival of the Living Dead (2024). They have publicly expressed interest in the Scream franchise on social media. Neither Spyglass nor Paramount has officially confirmed their involvement.

Until an official announcement arrives, the director’s chair remains open.

Release Date, Production Timeline, and Where to Watch

Scream 8 does not have an official release date. No filming start date has been locked either. Franchise executive producer Marianne Maddalena told Variety in February 2026 that production could begin in the fall of 2026, though sources cautioned that it was too early to confirm a start date.

Release date estimates based on the gaps between recent films point to a 2028 or 2029 arrival in theaters. Scream 7 opened in February 2026, Scream VI in March 2023, and the fifth film in January 2022. If Scream 8 follows a similar rhythm, a 2028 theatrical release is a reasonable window, but nothing is confirmed.

When the film does arrive, it will be a theatrical release distributed by Paramount Pictures, following the pattern of every previous Scream film. Streaming availability will depend on the studio’s post-theatrical deals, which have not been announced.

For global audiences, Scream 7 played in theaters across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India in February 2026. Scream 8 is expected to follow the same worldwide theatrical model.

Who Else Could Return for Scream 8

Campbell is the only cast member confirmed for Scream 8 so far. Courteney Cox has addressed the possibility of returning as Gale Weathers, but she has not committed to the film.

“How do you know I survived [Scream 7]? I think everyone should want to do another Scream. It’s fun and it’s great. I don’t think I can make the next one, but maybe we’ll see.”

Gale did survive Scream 7, so her character is alive and available for another film. Isabel May‘s Tatum also survived, and Joel McHale‘s Mark Evans lived through the events of the seventh film. Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks-Martin) and Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin) also made it out alive.

Scream 7 brought back Matthew Lillard in a cameo appearance, playing Stu Macher in a meta sequence. Whether Scream 8 will use similar legacy cameos is not known.

A Franchise That Just Crossed a Billion Dollars

The Scream franchise passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office after Scream 7 opened in February 2026. The film earned $97.2 million in its global debut weekend and finished its theatrical run with $208 million worldwide against a $45 million budget.

That made Scream 7 the highest-grossing Scream film ever, surpassing the original 1996 movie’s $173 million worldwide total.

Scream 7 did not arrive without controversy. The film was reworked after Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise and Jenna Ortega exited the project. Christopher Landon, who was set to direct, also left. Kevin Williamson stepped in to direct, and Campbell returned after sitting out Scream VI.

Campbell has spoken about why she came back. She told CBS Mornings that she “didn’t think I could live with myself” if she had accepted the offer for Scream VI knowing her value to the franchise was greater than what was offered. For Scream 7, she received a reported $7 million salary to return.
