NewJeans’ Hanni has shared a powerful message about artist rights amidst the group’s ongoing legal battles with ADOR and HYBE. She reposted Chappell Roan’s Grammy-winning speech, which addressed the mistreatment of artists by music labels. This move comes as Hanni herself is involved in a legal dispute with HYBE, having previously filed a complaint regarding workplace bullying.
Chappell Roan’s Grammy Speech Resonates
At the 2025 Grammy Awards, Chappell Roan won the Best New Artist category. During her acceptance speech, she spoke about the need for better treatment of artists within the music industry. Roan emphasized that:
“Record labels need to treat their artists as valuable employees, with a livable wage, health insurance, and protection. Labels, we got you — but do you got us?”
This message about fair compensation, healthcare, and protection for artists clearly resonated with Hanni, who shared the speech on her Instagram story. Given her own struggles with HYBE and ADOR, the timing of this share speaks volumes.
Hanni’s Legal Battles
Hanni’s legal issues with HYBE and ADOR have been ongoing. In October 2024, she attended a hearing at the National Assembly, where she detailed an alleged instance of workplace bullying at HYBE. She described an incident where she was ignored by another group and their manager in a HYBE hallway. However, the Ministry of Employment and Labor later ruled that Hanni was not legally classified as a worker and therefore not protected against workplace harassment under current laws.
NewJeans also previously announced their intention to terminate their contracts with ADOR, citing the company’s failure to meet their demands. ADOR responded by filing a lawsuit to enforce the contracts. NewJeans has since hired legal representation and stated they will not return to ADOR or HYBE. They even launched a fan contest for a temporary new group name, although ADOR has warned of potential legal repercussions for a name change.
