The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Conan O’Brien returning as host for the second year in a row. The evening celebrated the best films of 2025, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” emerging as the night’s biggest winner. The black comedy drama took home six Oscars, including the prestigious Best Picture award.
Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” came into the night with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most in Academy history. The film secured four wins, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. The ceremony also made history with Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the first woman to win Best Cinematography for her work on “Sinners”.
Best Picture Winner and Major Award Breakdown
“One Battle After Another” took home the top prize of the evening, winning Best Picture. The Warner Bros. film also earned Paul Thomas Anderson his first Oscars for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay after 11 previous nominations dating back to 1998. Anderson became just the ninth person in Academy history to win Best Picture, Directing, and Screenplay Oscars on the same night.
The film’s total of six awards included:
- Best Picture
- Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson)
- Best Adapted Screenplay (Paul Thomas Anderson)
- Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn)
- Best Film Editing (Andy Jurgensen)
- Best Casting (Cassandra Kulukundis)
“Sinners” followed with four wins, taking home Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Gรถransson.
Netflix’s “Frankenstein” secured three craft awards, winning Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. “KPop Demon Hunters” won two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the global smash “Golden”.
Best Actor and Best Actress Winners
The Best Actor category became one of the most talked-about races of the season. Michael B. Jordan won his first career Oscar for his dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack in “Sinners”. He beat out strong competition including Timothรฉe Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”), and Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”).
“I stand here because of the people who came before me. My father always told me, don’t expect anything to be handed to you, do the work knowing everything else is going to figure itself out.” โ Michael B. Jordan backstage at the Oscars
Jordan’s win followed his triumph at the Actor Awards (formerly SAG Awards) earlier in March. He dedicated his performance to Black actors who came before him, name-checking Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, and Forest Whitaker during his press room comments.
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her role as Agnes in “Hamnet,” becoming the first Irish actress to win the category. It was her first Academy Award nomination and win. Buckley played the wife of William Shakespeare, delivering what Jane Fonda later called a “feral” performance that came “from the depth of her soul”.
Accepting her award on Mother’s Day, Buckley shared a personal moment backstage: “It feels like some kind of crazy alchemy that all of these things are colliding on a day like today. My daughter also got her first tooth this week and I woke up today with the wee one snuggling, lying on my chest.” When asked what she wanted to say to people celebrating her win in Ireland, she quickly responded: “Don’t go to bed. Keep partying!”
Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress Winners
Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “One Battle After Another,” following up his win at the Actor Awards earlier this month. This marks Penn’s third career Oscar but his first in the supporting category. He also has three other nominations for Lead Actor. Penn was not present at the ceremony to accept his award.
Amy Madigan took home Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys in “Weapons”. She was a favorite heading into the night after wins at the Critics Choice and Actor Awards. Madigan previously received a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination back in 1986 for “Twice in a Life.” Her win marked her first Oscar after decades in the industry.
History-Making Moments at the 2026 Oscars
The 98th Academy Awards featured several historic firsts and memorable moments.
Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win Best Cinematography for her work on “Sinners”. The Filipino-American cinematographer made history as both the first woman and the first person of color to win the category. Backstage, she shared the significance of her win: “A lot of little girls that look like me will sleep really well tonight because they want to become cinematographers. And I know that just being on stage, getting this award or movie, that will change so many girls’ lives because they’ll be inspired when they weren’t before.”
The ceremony introduced a new competitive category: Best Casting, the first added since Best Animated Feature in 2001. Cassandra Kulukundis won the inaugural award for “One Battle After Another,” marking her 10th film collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson.
“We grew up watching movies and we grew up making movies together, and that’s why this thing is insane. It’s our 10th movie, and the collaboration changes on every movie.” โ Cassandra Kulukundis on her long partnership with Paul Thomas Anderson
Norway won its first Academy Award ever with “Sentimental Value” taking Best International Feature Film. The Neon-distributed film, which debuted at Cannes, was also nominated for Best Picture.
The evening marked only the seventh tie in Oscar history, which dates back to 1929. “The Singers” and “Two People Exchanging Saliva” both won Best Live Action Short Film. The last tie occurred at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013 when “Skyfall” and “Zero Dark Thirty” both won for sound editing.
