Netflix’s much-anticipated Korean original series, “Gyeongseong Creature,” faced a wave of mixed reviews following the release of its first seven episodes last month. Despite criticisms of its improbable plot, lead actor Park Seo-jun remains unfazed, attributing the varied reactions to viewers’ heightened interest in the show.
In a recent group media interview at a Seoul cafe, Park Seo-jun addressed the critiques, stating, “I’ve never experienced a lack of mixed reviews. It happens with every project. So, I was not emotionally affected. I rather felt the level of people’s interest was quite high.” The 35-year-old actor expressed satisfaction with the project, emphasizing that this two-year venture was a significant milestone in his career.
Portraying Jang Tae-sang, a wealthy Korean pawn-shop owner in a historical-action thriller set in 1945 Seoul during Japanese colonial rule, Park Seo-jun defended his character’s seemingly lighthearted approach against the dark backdrop. Responding to criticisms, he explained, “The overall story was more important. I wanted to make the beginning more lighthearted so that the audience would be able to feel his transformation more clearly when they see it later.”
The actor, known for his roles in the South Korean TV series “Itaewon Class” and the Hollywood superhero film “The Marvels,” revealed that starring in a Japanese colonial period drama has been a long-held desire. “For over 10 years in my career, I’ve always wanted to act in a drama set during the period,” he shared, adding that the combination of historical and creature elements in “Gyeongseong Creature” felt fresh and exciting.
Addressing the future of the series, Park Seo-jun hinted at Season 2, scheduled for release later this year. The show filmed its two seasons simultaneously, and Season 2 will extend its narrative to Seoul in 2024. According to Netflix, the upcoming season will introduce a character named Ho-jae, resembling Jang Tae-sang, and Yoon Chae-ok, as they uncover enigmatic events and connections.
While Park Seo-jun remained tight-lipped about specific details, he teased, “There are a lot of speculations going around based on the teaser video. What I can tell you right now is the keyword ‘memory.’ In Season 2, the things that were built up in the previous season will unfold at a faster pace.”
As fans eagerly await the continuation of “Gyeongseong Creature,” Park Seo-jun’s positive outlook and the promise of an intriguing Season 2 leave room for anticipation and excitement among viewers. The actor’s ability to navigate mixed reviews with grace reflects his confidence in the project’s overall impact on the audience.
