Paul Bettany is opening up about his long road through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor, who first joined the franchise as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. in 2008’s Iron Man, is now headlining his own Disney+ series, VisionQuest, which premieres on October 14, 2026. In a new Marvel featurette, Bettany looked back on his 18-year journey and explained how a disembodied AI assistant became one of the MCU’s most complicated characters.
What Paul Bettany Said About His First MCU Role
Bettany’s Marvel career started in a recording booth, not on a set. He played J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s artificial intelligence system, for several films before ever appearing on screen. In the new clip, Bettany recalled the unusual pitch he received from director Jon Favreau.
“The director rings me up and says, ‘Paul, I’ve got this part of the voice inside Tony Stark’s suit. He needs somebody with no personality whatsoever. I thought of you,’ and I immediately said yes.”
The joke landed, and Bettany took the job. What he did not know at the time was that Marvel would eventually give J.A.R.V.I.S. a body. In Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Tony Stark and Bruce Banner uploaded the surviving pieces of J.A.R.V.I.S. into a synthetic vibranium body powered by the Mind Stone. That body became Vision.
Bettany said the transition from voice actor to on-screen superhero felt surreal. “For them to then become Wanda Vision, it really was one of the highlights of my career. I loved it. To finally have my own show.”
VisionQuest Is a Story About Identity and Purpose
The main theme of VisionQuest is simple but heavy. Bettany described it in the featurette as: “What’s my purpose, and who am I?”
The series picks up after the events of WandaVision. White Vision, the reconstructed version of the character, has his memories back but no emotional connection to them. He is searching for meaning. Bettany called this a “really new exploration of Vision” and said it is “the heart of the show”.
Executive producer Mary Livanos explained the character’s dilemma in another Marvel featurette. Vision has all the data and knowledge of his past life, but none of the lived experience. The question now is whether he can become something more than a machine with memories.
The VisionQuest Story Brings Back Ultron and Tommy Maximoff
The new series does not just focus on Vision alone. James Spader returns as Ultron, the rogue AI that was originally Vision’s “father figure.” In VisionQuest, Ultron appears as a program living inside Vision’s mind. Bettany described him as “this psychopath that he’s keeping locked away upstairs in the attic”.
Bettany also shared his reaction when showrunner Terry Matalas suggested bringing Spader back. “The moment he went to me, ‘What do you think about getting James Spader back?’ I was like, ‘F—! That’s a great idea.’”
The series also introduces Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff, Vision and Wanda’s now-grown son. Vision finds himself on the run with a mysterious boy who may be his reincarnated son, while a bounty is placed on his head. Todd Stashwick plays Paladin, a mercenary hunting Vision’s advanced technology.
VisionQuest Marks the End of the WandaVision Trilogy
VisionQuest is the final chapter in a trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. The series will have eight episodes and will stream exclusively on Disney+, with episodes releasing weekly starting October 14, 2026.
Bettany confirmed at Disney’s Upfront presentation that the show concludes the WandaVision trilogy. The original architect of that trilogy, Jac Schaeffer, stepped away from VisionQuest for personal reasons. Bettany told Entertainment Weekly he felt like “the rug had been pulled from under my feet” when he heard the news, but he praised Matalas for stepping in quickly.
Bettany Teases Vision’s Future Beyond VisionQuest
The actor hinted that Vision’s story may not end with this series. In an interview with SFX Magazine, Bettany said the show’s ending is “a really exciting springboard for what Vision might do in the future”.
Fans have already begun speculating that Vision could appear in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, the two upcoming films expected to close out the current MCU saga. Bettany’s comments suggest the door is being left open on purpose.

Bettany also explained why he feels such a strong connection to the character. He said Vision appeals to people who feel like outsiders, and he counts himself among them.
“The people who are attracted to Vision are the people I was when I was at school,” Bettany said. He described those fans as “the misfits” and “the ones that were bullied.”
That personal link has shaped how he plays the role. Vision is not just a superhero to Bettany. He is a character who has always been figuring out where he belongs, which is something many viewers understand.
