The world’s most clueless documentary maker is coming back to screens. Philomena Cunk, the deadpan comedy character played by Diane Morgan, will return in a brand new series called Cunk on Cinema. The show is a joint production between the BBC and Netflix. Production started this week on the three-part series.

This marks the latest project for the famously uninformed presenter. She has previously tried to explain British history, planet Earth, and even the meaning of life. Now, she is setting her sights on the movie business. The new series will see Cunk interview real experts about the history of film, from silent movies to modern CGI.

What is ‘Cunk on Cinema’ About?

The show will follow Philomena Cunk as she asks experts “hard-hitting questions” about cinema. The official description says she will cover the invention of the camera, the New Wave filmmakers of the 1960s, and the rise of artificial intelligence in Hollywood.

As always, Cunk will try to make sense of it all from a theater seat. The producers say she will be “sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn” while asking big questions. She wants to know where cinema came from, what it wants, and “why can’t it tell us.”

Charlie Brooker, the creator of Black Mirror, is writing the series. He has worked with Morgan on every Cunk project since the character first appeared on Weekly Wipe in 2013. Brooker made a joke about the state of Hollywood in the announcement. He said now that AI has “killed off Hollywood,” it is the perfect time to look back at cinema with an “idiot we’re apparently cursed to employ.”

Diane Morgan’s Return as the Famous Character

Diane Morgan is back as the famously stupid presenter. Her deadpan delivery and totally wrong facts have made Cunk a fan favorite around the world. The character became a global hit after Cunk on Earth landed on Netflix. Clips from the show went viral on social media.

Speaking as her character, Morgan gave her usual strange take on movies.

“Cinema has given the world some of the most profound, memorable and moving visual moments in its unswerving depiction of the human condition: the shower scene in Psycho, Death playing chess in that Swedish thing, and Tom Selleck’s glistening moustache in Three Men And A Little Lady, to name but all three of the only examples I can think of at the moment. There will, unfortunately, be some bits in black and white, but we’ll keep that to the barest minimum.”

Jon Petrie, the BBC‘s Director of Comedy, shared his excitement about the show’s return.

“Philomena Cunk is back! As our leading intrepid documentary filmmaker, who better to investigate the world of cinema? This series follows in the hugely successful footsteps of other Cunk projects, so we can’t wait to see what she unearths this time around.”

Where to Watch and Release Details

Cunk on Cinema will air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For viewers in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and the rest of the world, the series will stream on Netflix.

The show consists of three half-hour episodes. The exact release date has not been announced yet. Since production started in April 2026, the series is expected to arrive later this year. The previous special, Cunk on Life, came out in late 2024.

This is the latest in a long line of Cunk projects. The character first appeared in 2013. She got her own specials like Cunk on Shakespeare (2016) and Cunk on Christmas (2016). The full series Cunk on Britain came out in 2018, followed by the global hit Cunk on Earth in 2022.
