The creator of the Apple TV series Pluribus has given fans a clear update on when to expect the second season. Vince Gilligan, known for making Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, recently spoke about the show’s return during a press event in Santa Monica. While the show is officially coming back, the wait will be much longer than many viewers hope.

Gilligan compared the production timeline to another popular series, The Pitt, and made it clear that Pluribus will not follow the same quick turnaround. The news has set expectations for fans who were hoping to see more of Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka in the near future.

What Vince Gilligan Said About Pluribus Season 2 Writing Progress

During Apple TV’s press day on February 3, 2026, Gilligan joined the cast for a panel discussion. Actor Samba Schutte moderated the conversation. When asked about how far the writers have gotten on season 2, Gilligan gave an honest answer about the slow pace.

“We’re plugging away,” Gilligan said. “My writers are plugging away. All the folks, if you like the show, thank you for getting us here on this stage. It takes a long time to come up with these episodes. We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out. But it takes some time, just as it did the first season.”

The show’s first season took years to develop. Gilligan mentioned that he had been thinking about the idea for more than ten years before it finally made it to screens. The Pluribus season 1 debuted on November 7, 2025, with nine episodes that ran until December 24, 2025. Apple TV had already ordered a second season before the first one even came out.

The Pitt Comparison and What It Means for Release Timeline

Gilligan used The Pitt, the HBO medical drama starring Noah Wyle, to explain how Pluribus season 2 will work differently. The Pitt first came out in January 2025 and returned for its second season in January 2026, keeping a tight yearly schedule. Pluribus will not follow that model.

“We appreciate everybody’s patience,” Gilligan said. “But it ain’t gonna be The Pitt, coming back every year. I wish it would be because it’s an awesome show that’s old-school, like we used to do The X-Files [when] we’d come back the same month every year. It will not be like The Pitt. We’ll come back the same month — just the question is what year.”

Since the first season of Pluribus arrived in November 2025, the earliest fans can expect new episodes is November 2027. Some reports suggest it could take until 2028 or beyond. This two-to-three year gap is similar to what viewers saw with another Apple TV sci-fi show, Severance, which had a long wait between its first and second seasons.

Why Pluribus Takes So Long to Make

The production scale of Pluribus is one reason for the slow pace. During an official podcast for the show, photographer Marshall Adams described the work that went into building the world. He talked about a complicated truck sequence from the pilot episode and the effort of creating an Air Force One base from scratch.

“This show is definitely one of the biggest things I’ve been involved in, planning-wise,” Adams said.

Gilligan’s approach to writing also adds to the time. He prefers to fully understand the story and themes before moving forward. At the press event, he explained the idea behind the show’s concept.

“I hate happy people. That’s why I wrote this,” Gilligan shared. “Probably my whole life — almost 60 years I’ve been thinking: ‘What is it about happiness?’ We’re always chasing it. It’s elusive, more so for some people than others.”

The series follows Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn, who is one of the few people not taken over by an alien virus that creates a global hive mind. The official description calls it “the most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.”

What Rhea Seehorn Said About Working With Vince Gilligan Again

Rhea Seehorn, who worked with Gilligan on Better Call Saul, spoke during the panel about their working relationship. She explained that working together multiple times gives them a special way of communicating.

“One of the biggest gifts for me — if you have the incredible fortune to work again and again with somebody as wonderful and talented and genius as Vince is — is that we start to have a little bit of a shorthand,” Seehorn said. “We can start to find little, tiny nuances, almost like the points that are between two points on a dial; they’re between one and two, and they’re between two and three. We have a lot of fun looking for how hard to push the comedy in this direction, how far can we push the drama or the terror or the fear.”

She added that the trust between them allows for more creative risks. “It takes a long time to feel like if I tried something and it really falls flat, like, he’s just gonna say, ‘Let’s try something else,’ instead of, ‘Ooh, we made a giant mistake.’ That was really very freeing.”

Pluribus Has Become Apple TV’s Biggest Show

The show has performed very well for Apple TV. In December 2025, Pluribus broke viewership records on the platform. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, said engagement on Apple TV+ went up 36 percent compared to the same time the year before. That marked a new record for monthly engagement since the service started.

The cast includes Karolina Wydra as Zosia, Carlos-Manuel Vesga as Manousos Oviedo, and Samba Schutte in a supporting role. Seehorn won a Critics Choice Award for her performance in the first season.

Gilligan has also shared his thoughts on how long the show could run. In a previous interview with Variety, he said he would continue making Pluribus for as many seasons as Seehorn wanted to be part of it. He estimated maybe four seasons in total but said he already has an idea of how the story should end.

“I think we have a pretty good idea of where it should end,” Gilligan said. “One of the most important things I can do in the writers room is not be too precious about the ideas. … If we come up with a better way to end this thing, we will.”

What Fans Can Expect Moving Forward

For now, the Pluribus season 2 release date remains unconfirmed. The writers are still working on the episodes, and filming has not started yet. Gilligan’s comments make it clear that anyone expecting a quick return will need to adjust their expectations.

The first season of Pluribus is available to stream on Apple TV+. When the second season does arrive, it will continue the story of Carol and the small group of humans fighting to stay free from the alien influence that has taken over most of the world.
