Tamil actors Elan and Saanve Megghana have spoken about the core message of their film Pyaar Prema Kalyanam, saying that marriage should not mean only women are expected to adjust. The actors believe the movie starts an important conversation about a topic many couples ignore: where will they live after marriage?
The romantic comedy, now streaming on Netflix, flips the traditional setup by showing a husband moving into his wife’s family home instead of the other way around. The film follows Pavithra (Pavi), a social media influencer played by Saanve Megghana, who refuses to leave her parents’ house after her wedding. Her husband Elan, played by director-turned-actor Elan, moves in with her family and faces the challenges of adjusting to a new household.
Film Reverses Traditional Marriage Norms
Pyaar Prema Kalyanam premiered on Netflix on August 21, 2026. The movie marks Elan’s acting debut. He previously directed the 2018 hit Pyaar Prema Kaadhal and the 2024 film Star. The story was written by Mumbai-based writer Nivedita Pohankar, who turned one of her father’s worries into the film’s central idea.
“More than talking about what is right and what is wrong, we just wanted to explore… we wanted the audience, after watching the movie, to start a conversation. That was our main idea.” – Elan
Elan told PTI that couples discuss many things before marriage but often ignore where they will live. He said, “For any couple who wants to get married, they also should discuss where they will live before tying the knot. We all discuss other things, like financial stability, babies and all that but this particular point is always taken for granted.”
Actors Say Women Should Not Always Be the Ones to Adjust
Saanve Megghana said the film treats the topic with humour rather than turning it into a serious social drama. She added that the idea of a woman asking her husband to move in with her family “should have been normalised long ago”.
“In Indian households, women are told to adjust and compromise, right? That doesn’t happen at all nowadays because women also are very much financially independent, and things have changed.” – Saanve Megghana
She also said the film shows that homemaking is not tied to gender. “Irrespective of the gender, anybody can be a homemaker. We made it like a housewife, but I felt it could be a house husband also. One should not be ashamed of being a house husband or working inside the house. I think we just have to break that conditioning.”
Elan said the movie was made to show the woman’s perspective. “The reason why I wanted to make this movie was to show the perspective of the women rather than showing what a man goes through. That’s not the point of the movie. This is strictly a movie to advocate what women have been going through for centuries.”

Supporting Cast and Production Details
The film features a strong supporting cast including Radhika Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu, M.S. Bhaskar, Geetha Kailasam, Elango Kumaravel, Senthil, and Maran. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the music for the film.
The movie is available in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on Netflix. It has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes.
Elan credited his team for helping him focus on his acting while directing. “Everybody literally helped me out, so I’m very grateful for them. Before shooting, we made sure that everything was clear to everyone so that I didn’t need to worry about my acting part on the floor.”
