Ranbir Kapoor responded to the criticism surrounding the visual effects of his upcoming film Ramayana. The actor said it is “quite funny” that people watch the trailer on their phones and then call the CGI bad.
The trailer for Nitesh Tiwari‘s Ramayana came out on July 30. It quickly became a hot topic online. Some people praised the film’s scale. But many viewers had strong negative opinions about the visual effects and computer-generated imagery. Social media users called the VFX “unfinished” and said it looked like it was made with AI.
Now, Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram in the film, has spoken up. In a conversation with Collider, the actor addressed the backlash. He was joined by director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra.
Ranbir Kapoor Calls Out Rise of ‘CG Critics’
Ranbir Kapoor pointed out a new trend he has noticed. He said many people online have become “CG critics”. These are people who watch a trailer and immediately judge the quality of the visual effects.
“There has been a phenomenon right now. In the last few years, there are such a large number of people who have become these CG critics,” Ranbir said.
The actor explained that people are now more aware of CGI because of the growing talk around artificial intelligence. But he feels this awareness does not always mean understanding.
“I think it’s quite funny sometimes because people who don’t know how CG is done, they think someone has just used some AI and released something,” Ranbir said.
The 43-year-old actor made it clear that creating good visual effects is not a simple process. He shared that the team has been working very hard for a long time.
“There are countless hours of work where artists are working for years. I have seen Nitesh sir and Namit sitting on VFX calls ever since this project started, trying to get even a certain colour of the sky right,” he said.
Ranbir admitted that it is difficult to impress today’s audience with authentic computer graphics.
“It’s tricky right now trying to impress the audience with authentic CGI,” he added.
Namit Malhotra Says Ramayana Is Made for IMAX, Not Phones
Producer Namit Malhotra also shared his thoughts on the criticism. He argued that people are not watching the trailer the right way. He said many viewers are judging the visuals on their phones, often with poor internet connections.
Malhotra, who runs the visual effects company DNEG, said the film was made for the big screen.
“We are spending years and millions of dollars to make something for that big screen experience, and then you judge it on a phone or not great internet connection,” Malhotra said.
He shared an example to prove his point. When the team showed the teaser to people on a large IMAX screen in 3D, the reaction was very different.
“When we launched our previous teaser, we heard a fair amount of noise around some aspects of what we had done. And the same people, when we showed it to them on a big IMAX screen in 3D, all of those conversations changed,” Namit said.
He called the online criticism “noise”. Malhotra also said the team has been encouraging content creators and influencers to watch the visuals in the right format.
“They are judging stuff on their phones, and not in great condition,” he added.
Nitesh Tiwari Reveals Some VFX Sequences Took 3 Years to Complete
Director Nitesh Tiwari spoke about the huge amount of work that has gone into Ramayana. He said the team is still putting the finishing touches on the film.
Tiwari revealed that some visual effects sequences took nearly three years to complete. The scale of the project has been massive, with artists spending a long time on individual scenes.
The director also responded to the criticism directly. He said when a person watches something only to find mistakes, they overlook the years of effort from the whole team. Even a small error gets blown up into a big issue.

Ramayana is one of the most expensive films ever made in Indian cinema. The reported budget is ₹4,000 crore. The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, who previously made Dangal and Chhichhore.
Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram in the epic. The film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Raavan. The cast includes Sunny Deol, Ravie Dubey, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, and Vivek Oberoi.
The movie is being released in two parts. Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release internationally on November 6, 2026. The domestic release in India is set for November 8, 2026. The film will hit theatres during the Diwali festival. Ramayana: Part 2 is planned for release in November 2027.
The visual effects company DNEG, led by Namit Malhotra, is handling the VFX work. DNEG has won eight Oscars for Best Visual Effects. The company has worked on major Hollywood films like Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune.
