The Season 3 finale of School Spirits left fans with a emotional punch. Maddie (Peyton List) finally reunited with Wally (Milo Manheim) in a mysterious forest behind his scar door, only to have to leave him there when she returned to the living world.
Paramount+ has not yet renewed the supernatural drama for a fourth season . But the showrunners already have clear ideas about where Maddie and Wally’s relationship could go if the series continues. Executive producers Megan Trinrud, Nate Trinrud, and Oliver Goldstick recently shared multiple hints about the couples complicated future .
The Reunion That Changes Everything
The Season 3 finale gave viewers a moment they waited for all season. When Wally finally went through his scar door, Maddie followed. In the forest beyond—a place the producers call the ley lines or ghost roads—the two could finally touch each other again .
Megan Trinrud described this as the payoff to a season of longing. We kept calling it a long-distance relationship, she told TVLine. Theyre basically on Zoom with each other all the time. The Episode 8 embrace was the satisfaction of them finally getting to be together again .
But the joy was short-lived. Maddie had to return to the living world with Simon, leaving Wally, Janet, Dawn, and her father stranded in the unknown forest .
The Core Question: Can They Be Together?
The showrunners are honest about the difficulty of Maddie and Wallys situation. Nate Trinrud explained their thinking to Us Weekly. He said the show explores what it means to lose somebody and the lengths youd go to have them back, whether thats healthy or not. When is the right time to let go versus fight for it? I cant tell you theres a perfect answer. Because there isnt .
Megan Trinrud previously told Swoon that theres still more to explore with the couple. She said its going to be interesting to see what the challenges are that they would have to overcome, if they can overcome them, or if it is a thing where sometimes you dont get to say a proper goodbye .
The New World Changes the Rules
The forest where Wally is stuck is not the final destination the characters expected. The doors dont lead to crossing over. They lead to another level of challenge .
Oliver Goldstick described it as a third world for Maddie to navigate. The idea is that the characters are leveling up, confronted with a new kind of afterlife they have to figure out .
For Wally, this might not be entirely bad. Megan Trinrud noted that in Episode 7, Wally was honest with Rhonda. He said I dont hate this, I dont hate being here. She suggested that not every ghost automatically wants to move on, and having a broader world to explore might change things .
Does Maddie Have a Path Back?
The biggest question for a potential Season 4 is whether Maddie can return to the forest. Nate Trinrud confirmed the writers are thinking about this. If Maddie has a pathway, if we revealed now that Maddie has access to kind of move between, what does that cost her? Is that good for her? .
He added that the new conflict is about what happens when you could have somebody back. Is fighting for that healthy? .
Megan Trinrud emphasized that theres still a lot to learn about the new world before anyone goes jumping back in headfirst. Weve only just started to look at whats beyond the door and whats the purpose of that place .
No Love Triangle With Xavier
Some fans wondered if Maddie might reconnect with her ex-boyfriend Xavier (Spencer MacPherson) in Season 3. The showrunners shut down that idea firmly.
Oliver Goldstick took responsibility for a line that caused confusion. Xavier told Maddie he wished theyd gotten together later. Goldstick said it was not a come-on line. It was a true observation of were not who we were .
Nate Trinrud added that the show is not prescribing romance into Maddie and Xavier. The focus remains on Wally .
The Barrier Is Down
The Season 3 finale destroyed the barrier keeping ghosts on campus . This changes everything for characters like Rhonda, Charley, and Quinn. But it also creates a new kind of distance.
Oliver Goldstick pointed out that Wallys mother showing up to games was discussed. How many of the people they loved did not show up? These ghosts havent seen people they loved in 40 years .
For Wally, this could mean encounters with his family. His sister might be an adult woman in her 50s now, possibly selling off his things .
The Complication of Van Heidt
The finale ended with the villainous ghost Van Heidt possessing Maddies mother, Sandra . This puts Maddie in an impossible position. She just repaired her relationship with her mom, who caused much of her trauma. Now she may have to save the person who crushed her spirit .
Nate Trinrud connected this to Maddie and Wallys separation. He said the question becomes what would you do to have somebody back, and is that healthy? .
What the Actors Bring
Milo Manheim brings a specific energy to Wally that the producers love. His chemistry with Peyton List makes the longing feel real . But Manheims schedule could be a factor. He was cast in Disneys live-action Tangled remake in January 2026, which may film later this year .
Will There Be a Season 4?
Paramount+ has not announced a decision yet . After Season 2, the network waited about two weeks before renewing the show . If that pattern holds, news could come soon.
The third season performed well. The series ranked second in the U.S. Top 10 on Amazon channels on February 20 . That bodes well for renewal chances.
Megan Trinrud told TVLine they are just waiting to see. Were hopeful.
