Fans of Korean cinema rejoice! The highly anticipated sci-fi film “Wonderland,” boasting a star-studded cast including Gong Yoo, Park Bo Gum, Choi Woo Shik, Jung Yu Mi, Bae Suzy, and Tang Wei, is finally set to premiere in South Korea this June.
This news comes after previous discussions of a May 2024 premiere were delayed due to undisclosed scheduling conflicts. A global release is also expected to follow, though details on the platform and timing remain unavailable.
A Glimpse into Wonderland
“Wonderland” is the brainchild of acclaimed director Kim Tae-yong, known for his works like “Memento Mori” (1999), “Family Ties” (2006), and “Late Autumn” (2010). This upcoming film promises a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy.
The story revolves around a technologically advanced simulated world called “Wonderland.” Here, individuals are given the opportunity to reunite with loved ones they can no longer interact with in the real world.
A Star-Studded Cast with Intriguing Roles
The captivating plot, coupled with the impressive cast lineup, has already generated significant buzz among movie enthusiasts.
Park Bo Gum, known for his role in “Youth of May,” and Bae Suzy, the star of “Doona!,” portray a young couple. Their idyllic relationship takes a turn when Park Bo Gum’s character falls into a coma, prompting Suzy’s character to seek solace in a virtual reunion within Wonderland.
Veteran actor Gong Yoo takes on a more mature role. He portrays a man in his 40s who deeply misses his deceased wife. He enters Wonderland to experience a virtual reunion with her.
Chinese actress Tang Wei, who previously collaborated with director Kim on “Late Autumn,” reunites with him on screen. She portrays Gong Yoo’s late wife, who appears alongside him in the simulated reality.
Completing the cast are Choi Woo Shik, recently seen in “A Killer Paradox” (2024), and actress Jung Yu Mi, known for her role in “Train to Busan” (2016). They play the Wonderland coordinators, responsible for overseeing the events within the simulated world.
A Long-Awaited Premiere
While filming for “Wonderland” concluded well before Park Bo Gum’s military enlistment in 2020, the film’s release faced unforeseen obstacles. Now, with the confirmed June premiere in South Korea and the promise of a global release, moviegoers are eagerly anticipating the on-screen chemistry between the star cast, particularly the fresh pairing of Park Bo Gum and Bae Suzy.
