The Apple TV+ comedy-drama series Shrinking wrapped up its third season on April 8, 2026. The finale, titled “And That’s Our Time,” delivered emotional payoffs for all the main characters. Jason Segel (Jimmy), Harrison Ford (Paul), and the rest of the cast brought the season to a close that focused on letting go and moving forward. The episode gave fans a proper farewell to the show’s current chapter as the series prepares for a big change in Season 4.

The season finale dealt heavily with change. Alice (Lukita Maxwell) packed her bags for college at Wesleyan. Paul (Harrison Ford) officially retired and moved to Connecticut. Sean (Luke Tennie) finally moved out of Jimmy’s pool house. Everyone around Jimmy was leaving, and the finale showed exactly how he handled being left behind.

Jimmy’s Airport Goodbye to Alice Does Not Go As Planned

The emotional center of the Shrinking Season 3 finale was Jimmy’s goodbye to his daughter Alice at the airport. Jimmy spent days planning the perfect farewell. He rehearsed specific words he wanted to say to Alice before she left for college. Paul warned him earlier that planning every detail would only set him up for disappointment.

The goodbye scene turned into a comedy of errors. Summer, Alice’s best friend, showed up at the last minute with a plane ticket. She decided to fly with Alice all the way to Connecticut to see her off at the college campus. Every time Jimmy tried to say his prepared speech, Summer interrupted with jokes or questions. The teenagers rushed to catch their flight, and Jimmy never got to say the perfect words he had practiced.

But that was the point. The old Jimmy would have broken down because reality did not match his fantasy. Instead, he accepted the mess. He admitted to feeling sad and heartbroken about his daughter leaving home. But he did not fall apart. He learned to cope with the help of his friends and the lessons from his own therapy journey.

Before the airport scene, Jimmy had to mediate a fight between Alice and Summer. Summer made mean comments about Alice constantly reminding everyone she was leaving for college. Jimmy brought the two friends together at an ice cream parlor. He explained that Summer was acting mean because she was sad about losing her best friend. He told them not to waste their last hours together being angry.

“You cannot control grief. You cannot control people leaving. You can only choose how to respond.” – Paul’s core message to Jimmy in the finale

Paul Returns to Pasadena to Make Things Right

Paul and Jimmy had a major fight right before Paul left town forever. Jimmy projected his anger toward his own father onto Paul. The fight left both men feeling terrible. Jimmy called Paul to apologize, and they had their first real conversation in weeks.

Paul talked about Jimmy’s behavioral pattern during that phone call. Jimmy always pictures conversations in his head and then gets upset when they do not go that way. Paul pointed out that Jimmy had already planned the airport goodbye with Alice exactly the same way. But Paul did not try to stop him this time. He understood that Jimmy needed to have those plans for himself.

Then Paul did something completely unexpected. He showed up at the Pasadena café where he and Jimmy were supposed to have their final breakfast together. He surprised Jimmy by already being there. Paul had traveled all the way from Connecticut just to make things right. He also invited Sofi (Cobie Smulders) to join them.

This moment showed how much Paul truly cared about Jimmy. He got over his excuse that he could not help because he lived too far away. He physically traveled to Pasadena to fix their relationship. The show made it clear that Jimmy looks up to Paul as a father figure, something his real father Randy never could be.

Sean Finally Tells Jimmy the Truth About Moving Out

Sean had secretly moved out of Jimmy’s pool house. He was now living in Derek’s spare house without paying rent. Sean could not bring himself to tell Jimmy the truth. He worried that Jimmy would feel abandoned, especially with Alice and Paul also leaving at the same time.

Sean pretended he still lived in the pool house. He came to Jimmy’s house early every morning to keep up the lie. Derek kept pushing Sean to come clean and just rip the bandage off. The situation got worse when Jimmy asked Sean to host a game night at the pool house after Alice left.

Sean finally told Jimmy the truth. All his fear turned out to be unnecessary. Jimmy felt happy and proud of Sean for moving forward in his life. He admitted he would miss having Sean around all the time. But Sean’s new place was only four blocks away. They could still see each other whenever they wanted.

Gaby Takes Control of Her Own Engagement Story

Derrick had been planning to propose to Gaby for months. He already bought the ring. But he kept waiting for the perfect time. First, Gaby’s patient died by suicide, and she went into a spiral. Then other things kept getting in the way.

Gaby accidentally found the engagement ring while looking through a bedside drawer. She tried it on out of curiosity and excitement. Then she could not get it off her finger. She had to run to Liz’s house for help. Liz already knew about the proposal because Derek had told her.

Gaby felt conflicted. She thought Derrick should have talked to her before spending so much money on a ring. Her past failed relationships made her look for problems in every good situation. Her friends helped her talk through her feelings.

In the end, Gaby turned the tables. She arranged a surprise proposal for Derrick instead of waiting for him to propose to her. The couple had a serious conversation about their future. Gaby accepted that Derrick bought her the ring because he wanted to make her happy. The finale ended with Gaby and Derrick officially engaged.

The Final Café Scene Changes Everything

The last scene of the Shrinking Season 3 finale was deceptively simple. Jimmy walked into the café. He saw Sofi sitting there, thanks to Paul’s invitation. He sat down across from her. That was it.

This quiet moment carried the entire weight of the season. Jimmy stopped trying to control outcomes. He stopped planning perfect conversations. He simply chose to participate in life again. He chose uncertainty over control. He chose connection over isolation.

Paul told Jimmy earlier that moving forward does not mean erasing the past. It means refusing to let the past dictate every decision. Jimmy finally understood that lesson. The finale did not need a dramatic romantic declaration. It just needed Jimmy to show up and sit down.
