The popular ABC crime dramedy High Potential is coming back for a third season. The network confirmed the news in March 2026, weeks before the Season 2 finale aired on April 7, 2026.

The show, starring Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, a cleaning lady with a 160 IQ who helps the LAPD solve murders, has become one of ABC’s top-rated dramas. But the renewal comes with a big shakeup behind the scenes and a major cast departure that has fans talking.

Third Season Confirmed by ABC

High Potential Season 3 received an early renewal from ABC in early March 2026. The network also renewed 9-1-1 for its 10th season and Abbott Elementary for its sixth season around the same time.

The show has been a ratings success. The winter premiere episode gathered 12.33 million viewers across ABC, Hulu, and other digital platforms within seven days. That number marked an increase from the fall season average.

The show airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Both existing seasons are available for streaming on Hulu.

Showrunner Exits After Season 2

Todd Harthan, who took over as showrunner before Season 1 premiered, will leave his position after Season 2. He is leaving to work on Eragon, a live-action adaptation of Christopher Paolini’s book series for Disney+.

Harthan previously spoke about what he planned for the show’s future.

“What we’re plotting and planning, it has a different flavor than what we did last year, but I think it’s gonna be even more personal, even more propulsive, even more surprising than what we did in Season 1, because we’ve learned some things and the characters have gotten richer.”

This marks the second showrunner change for the series. Rob Thomas originally served as showrunner but left before the show even premiered in June 2024. ABC has not yet announced who will replace Harthan for Season 3.

Major Cast Member Leaving

Steve Howey, who joined the cast in Season 2 as Captain Jesse Wagner, will not return as a series regular for High Potential Season 3.

The Season 2 finale showed Wagner getting stabbed in a dramatic scene. While his character’s death has not been officially confirmed, reports indicate Howey will leave his main cast role. There is a possibility he could return as a guest star in future episodes if the character survives.

Howey’s character had developed a close relationship with Morgan throughout Season 2, with fans enjoying their on-screen chemistry.

When Will Season 3 Release?

ABC has not set an official release date for High Potential Season 3. Based on previous seasons, the show will likely return in Fall 2026. Season 1 premiered in September 2024, and Season 2 premiered in September 2025.

The third season is expected to have 18 episodes, matching the length of Season 2. Season 1 had 13 episodes.

What to Expect From Season 3

The Season 2 finale left several stories unfinished. Morgan continued searching for answers about Roman, her ex who went missing over a decade ago and turned out to be an FBI informant. The finale also showed Lucia involved in a criminal case that ended her relationship with Karadec.

With a new showrunner coming in, the direction of Season 3 could shift. But the core cast including Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Judy Reyes is expected to return.

The show is based on the French series Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (HPI) and was created by Drew Goddard. ABC has not announced a premiere date for the new season yet.
