The Season 2 finale of High Potential left fans with more questions than answers. The April 7 episode delivered a bloody cliffhanger, a major breakup, and fresh details about Morgan’s missing ex Roman. ABC’s hit crime show ended its second season with two big twists that will keep viewers waiting until Season 3 arrives later this year.
The episode titled “Family Tree” saw Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson) digging deeper into the mystery of Roman’s disappearance. What she found changed everything she thought she knew about the father of her child. Meanwhile, her partner Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) faced a painful personal betrayal that forced him to make an impossible choice.
Karadec Gets Heartbroken After Lucia’s Secret Comes Out
The episode’s main case took Morgan and Karadec to a fancy hotel where a reality TV star got murdered. The investigation quickly pointed to Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson), Karadec’s girlfriend who worked at the hotel. Morgan noticed something was off about Lucia and figured out she helped cover up the crime.
Lucia let her ex-boyfriend Charles into the hotel room where the murder happened. Charles threatened to destroy Karadec’s career if Lucia didn’t help him. Even though she didn’t plan the killing, Lucia still broke the law. Karadec had no choice but to arrest her himself and end their relationship.
Kaitlin Olson explained that Morgan felt guilty about pushing Karadec to give Lucia a chance. “She feels responsible for breaking his heart,” Olson told TV Insider. The moment became even more painful because Morgan saw the red flags first but hoped she was wrong.
The finale ended with Karadec visiting Morgan at her home to apologize. He admitted he should have trusted her instincts about Lucia. The two shared a comforting hug, showing how their bond keeps growing stronger despite everything falling apart around them.
Willa Quinn Drops Shocking News About Roman
The biggest story of the finale involved Roman, Morgan’s ex who vanished years ago. Willa Quinn (Jennifer Jason Leigh) finally gave Morgan some answers, but they weren’t the ones she wanted. Willa revealed that Roman worked with an FBI agent named Lyla Flynn who was involved in shady government activities.
According to Willa, Roman killed Lyla when she decided to come clean about their crimes. A photo showed a hooded Roman leaving Lyla’s house, and Morgan recognized his car in the picture. The FBI supposedly helped cover up the murder because the case was too big to handle publicly.
Olson said Morgan refuses to fully believe what Willa told her. “She’s not necessarily that trustworthy,” Olson noted about Willa. But the possibility that she might have been wrong about Roman for 15 years terrifies Morgan. “Not being able to trust yourself when you’re always the smartest person in the room has to be the scariest thing,” Olson told TheWrap.
Willa also threatened Morgan’s children, warning that her search for the truth put Elliott and Chloe in danger. That threat backfired badly. Morgan got so angry that she rear-ended Willa’s car to force her to talk.

Wagner Gets Stabbed After Meeting a Mysterious Source
Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) spent much of the season as a confusing figure. The finale finally showed his true loyalties. Wagner helped Morgan get a meeting with an FBI source who knew about Roman. His father connected him to this person.
Wagner told Morgan to meet him at a park at 8 PM. But he gave her the wrong time on purpose to keep her safe. When Morgan arrived at 8:30 PM, she found Wagner bleeding on the ground from stab wounds. Someone attacked him during the meeting.
Olson said Morgan blames herself for what happened to Wagner. “It’s all because she opened up this Pandora’s box of trying to figure out where Roman went,” she explained. “She’s feeling like all of this happened because she was selfish.” The episode did not confirm whether Wagner survives his injuries.
Deadline reported that Steve Howey will not return as a series regular for Season 3. He joined the show with a one-year contract. However, sources say there is a chance he could come back as a guest star at the beginning of next season to finish Wagner’s story. Howey already has roles in upcoming shows including Off Campus on Prime Video and Ransom Canyon on Netflix.
A Mysterious Figure Shows Up at Ava’s Art Show
The finale’s final moments showed a hooded figure standing at Ava’s (Amirah J) art show. The person watched Ava from a distance before disappearing into the shadows. While the show did not show the figure’s face, many fans believe it was Roman finally coming back to see his daughter.
Amirah J told TVLine that the production filmed different versions of this moment. “There was a version where she saw this shadowy figure, and there was a version where she didn’t,” she said. The actress hopes the figure is really Roman. “I want to know where Roman is — I want to know who Roman is,” she added.
Olson also thinks the show needs to give fans answers about Roman soon. “I’m not sure people are going to care much longer,” she admitted. “You can’t go three seasons stringing it out.”
What the Finale Means for Morgan’s Love Life
The Season 2 finale left Morgan in a complicated spot romantically. She shared a kiss with Wagner in the previous episode, but he may now be dead or seriously injured. Karadec just lost his girlfriend Lucia and is single again. Many fans have wanted Morgan and Karadec to get together since the show started.
Olson said the kiss with Wagner was “very mutual” and that Morgan had real feelings for him. “She thinks this is the beginning of something,” Olson explained. But Wagner’s fate remains unclear. The actress also teased that the Morgan-Karadec relationship will continue to be fun to watch. “How do they help each other through this double heartbreak,” she said.
Amirah J, who plays Ava, told TVLine she loves the slow burn between Morgan and Karadec. “I understand that we may not get Morgan and Karadec immediately, but I hope it’ll come,” the actress said.

Showrunner Change Coming Before Season 3
High Potential will have a new person in charge when it returns. Todd Harthan left the show after Season 2 to work on the Eragon live-action series for Disney+. The search for a new showrunner is currently happening.
Olson, who also works as an executive producer, said she is being very careful about choosing the right person. “This show is so special to me,” she told TheWrap. “It’s not just one tone. I never want to lose the fact that she’s fun. I like being an unpredictable wild card.”
ABC already renewed High Potential for Season 3 last month. The show continues to draw big audiences, pulling in nearly 13 million viewers after seven days of viewing across ABC, Hulu, and other platforms.
The Season 2 finale is now streaming on Hulu. Season 3 will air later this year on ABC.
