Hwang Dong Hyuk, the director of Squid Game, has responded to the backlash surrounding the casting of former BIGBANG member T.O.P in the upcoming second season. Fans had mixed reactions to the announcement, citing the artist’s legal history and statements about leaving the entertainment industry.
Director Explains Casting Decision
Hwang Dong Hyuk addressed concerns during a recent interview, stating:
“I didn’t anticipate such public concern. T.O.P’s incident involving marijuana use happened long ago, and he has already served his sentence. I felt it might be an appropriate time for him to return to work.”
The director shared that T.O.P showed dedication throughout the audition process, adding:
“He demonstrated strong commitment through auditions, practice videos, and script readings.”
Hwang clarified that his decision was based solely on the actor’s suitability for the role, dismissing rumors about favoritism or personal connections.
T.O.P’s Past and Fan Reactions
In 2017, T.O.P received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, due to marijuana use. The incident also led to his discharge from military service and a subsequent period of low activity in the entertainment industry. When his involvement in Squid Game 2 was announced, some fans expressed discomfort, while others were supportive of his return.
