The countdown to the final season of The Boys has officially begun. With the world premiere held in Italy on March 19, 2026, and the first two episodes arriving on Prime Video on April 8, fans are eager to know how the violent story of Billy Butcher and Homelander will wrap up.
The Amazon series has always taken its own path away from the original comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. But as the show prepares for its final eight episodes, many viewers are asking one big question: will Butcher and Homelander have their long-awaited one-on-one fight? And what does the comic book ending tell us about what might happen?
Here is a look at how the comics ended and what the show’s creator has said about the final confrontation between Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher and Antony Starr’s Homelander.
The Comic Book Ending Did Not Give Butcher the Final Fight
In the original The Boys comic series, the final battle between Butcher and Homelander never actually happens. Instead, the person who kills Homelander is Black Noir, a member of The Seven who is revealed to be a clone of Homelander himself.
Towards the end of the comics, Homelander plans to take over the country. But Black Noir stops him, revealing that he had been committing terrible crimes while disguised as Homelander for years. The two supes fight, and although Black Noir is badly hurt, he kills Homelander by pulling out his guts.
This is very different from the TV show, where Homelander killed the original Black Noir in season 3. However, season 4 introduced a new person wearing the Black Noir suit. Some fans think this new character might play a similar role to the comic book version in the final season.
Butcher’s Dark Path in the Comics
In the comic books, after Homelander dies, Billy Butcher becomes the main villain. He secretly creates a plan to kill every supe on the planet using a special version of Compound V. The problem is that regular people would also die because Compound V had already spread into the food supply.
To make sure no one stops his plan, Butcher kills his own team members. He murders Frenchie, Kimiko (called the Female in the comics), and Mother’s Milk. He had already killed Mallory earlier.
The only person left to stop him is Hughie. The two have a final fight on top of the Empire State Building. Butcher falls and breaks his neck, leaving him paralyzed. When police arrive, Butcher knows he cannot live as a prisoner in a wheelchair. He lies to Hughie, saying he killed Hughie’s parents, so that Hughie will kill him. Hughie stabs Butcher with a metal spike, and Butcher dies with a smile on his face.
What Show Creator Eric Kripke Has Said About the Final Fight
Eric Kripke, the creator of the TV series, has shared important details about how he sees the relationship between Butcher and Homelander. In interviews with TV Insider, he explained that both characters are on the same emotional journey.
“Homelander’s story in the season was one of mortality and legacy. He’s getting older, so he wants to go back and face his childhood and try to put all that behind him. He wants to try to be this good father and create this legacy moving forward, and all that’s very intentional, and it’s also exactly what Butcher’s going through,” Kripke said.
He added that the show loves putting these two characters through the same experiences so viewers can see how they react differently. “They have this two sides of the same coin thing where they’re the epic hero and villain of the show. So anytime that we get an opportunity to mirror what they’re going through, we take it,” Kripke explained.
In earlier comments, Kripke said he always planned for the show to end with these two forces finally smashing into each other. “The show is, at the end of the day, about these two forces charging towards each other, between Butcher and Homelander. I know that them finally smashing into each other, once and for all, will be a big part of whatever end game we come up with,” he told SlashFilm.
What the Season 5 Trailer Shows
The full trailer for The Boys Season 5, released in March 2026, shows both Butcher and Homelander preparing for their final conflict. Homelander talks about finding the original version of Compound V, called V-One, which could make him immortal. Butcher, meanwhile, seems ready to release a virus that kills all supes, even if it means dying himself.
The trailer also shows Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) returning from being frozen, and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) possibly turning against Homelander. Cast members from Gen V will also appear in the final season, including Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau.
Will the Show Follow the Comics?
The TV series has never been a strict adaptation of the comics. Many major plot points are completely different. The show’s version of Butcher is more likable than the comic book version, and Homelander has been the main villain since episode one.
Some fan theories suggest that the show might still use the idea of Butcher becoming the final villain, but possibly after he kills Homelander first. Others think the show will create its own ending that is different from both the comics and fan expectations.
One thing is clear: the final season will not have a simple happy ending. Kripke has said there will be “lots of deaths” and “there’s no guarantee of who’s gonna survive.”
