The explosive first episode of The Night Manager Season 2 introduces a dangerous new villain and ends with a shocking act of violence. When Teddy Dos Santos, a Colombian arms dealer, kills his own man, Jaco, it leaves Jonathan Pine’s fate uncertain and resets the game of international espionage .

This premiere episode, which aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on January 1, 2026, picks up years after the events of the first season . Tom Hiddleston returns as Jonathan Pine, now operating under the new identity of Alex Goodwin. He leads a surveillance unit called the Night Owls within MI6, a quieter life that is violently disrupted by a ghost from his past . The episode sets the stage for a complex new conflict rooted in betrayal, legacy, and ruthless ambition.

The New Threat: Who is Teddy Dos Santos?

Teddy Dos Santos is the central new figure of the season, played by Mexican actor Diego Calva. He is introduced as a wealthy Colombian businessman and philanthropist, the CEO of a company called Barquero and the founder of a charity named Aurora. This public image of humanitarian work is a direct cover for his real operations: running a major international arms network and training a guerrilla army .

Crucially, Teddy positions himself not just as another arms dealer, but as the direct successor to Richard “Dickie” Roper, the villain from Season 1. He calls himself “Richard Roper’s true disciple,” a phrase that immediately grabs Pine’s attention . Early investigations by Pine’s team uncover promotional videos for Teddy’s Aurora charity that feature cameos from Roper himself, confirming a deep, pre-existing connection between the two men .

Diego Calva, known for his roles in Babylon and Narcos: Mexico, brings a calm and calculated menace to the role . In an interview, Calva described his approach to playing Teddy, stating that “Sometimes that kind of silence is way more threatening”. This stillness contrasts with Roper’s more flamboyant arrogance, marking Teddy as a more controlled and perhaps more dangerous evolution of the same evil .

Jaco Brouwer: A Dangerous Link to the Past

The thread that leads Pine to Dos Santos is Jaco Brouwer, a mercenary and former soldier from Roper’s private military force, known as the Haven . Pine recognizes Jaco during a routine surveillance operation in London, a sighting that sends him spiraling back into the trauma of his past mission .

Jaco’s presence signals that the remnants of Roper’s empire did not vanish. He is actively working in the arms trade, brokering a new shipment of weapons destined for the port of Cartagena in Colombia. Pine’s team surveils Jaco and hears him refer to his mysterious new boss, the man who “learned from the best” . This boss is Teddy Dos Santos.

However, Jaco becomes a problem. He is depicted as sloppy or perhaps overconfident, speaking too openly about shipments and meeting with intermediaries who are themselves under scrutiny . In the shadowy world of arms dealing, attracting any attention is a fatal risk. Jaco’s actions potentially expose the entire operation, making him a glaring liability .

Why Teddy Dos Santos Killed Jaco

The climax of the episode occurs at a hotel where Jaco is scheduled to meet with Teddy . Pine and his Night Owls team are on-site, having planted a tracking device on Jaco’s diplomatic briefcaseโ€”a case believed to contain forged documents to facilitate the weapons transfer . The meeting is a trap, but not for Jaco.

Teddy arrives and immediately discovers the tracking device . This single piece of evidence confirms his suspicion: Jaco has been compromised and led surveillance directly to their doorstep. In that moment, Jaco transforms from a trusted operative into the single greatest threat to Teddy’s secrecy and control.

Teddy’s decision to kill Jaco is a cold, strategic calculation, not an act of impulsive rage . Eliminating Jaco serves multiple critical purposes for Teddy:

  • It removes a compromised and talkative asset who can no longer be trusted.
  • It severs a direct link between Teddy’s new operation and the old Roper organization, hindering investigators.
  • Most importantly, it sends a devastating message to anyone watchingโ€”including Pine and MI6โ€”about the consequences of interference .

The method of execution is especially brutal and symbolic. Teddy straps a bomb to Jaco’s body . When Pine races to the hotel room, he finds Jaco’s body rigged to explode. The subsequent blast does more than just kill Jaco; it kills two members of Pine’s team, destroys all evidence in the room, and creates massive chaos that allows Teddy to walk away calmly and unseen .

The explosion also leaves Pine’s fate hanging in the balance as the episode concludes, throwing him physically and professionally into disarray .

The Wider Conspiracy and Pine’s Precarious Position

Jaco’s death is the most violent symptom of a much larger infection within the intelligence community. Before the hotel bombing, Pine’s investigation had already revealed that Mayra Cavendish, the new Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (played by Indira Varma), is secretly in business with Teddy Dos Santos . This high-level corruption within MI6, known as River House, means Pine cannot trust the very institution he works for .

This conspiracy is directly linked to the murder of Pine’s superior and ally, Rex Mayhew (Douglas Hodge). Earlier in the episode, Rex is found dead in an apparent suicide shortly after telling Pine he had urgent information about Jaco . Pine knows it was an assassination meant to silence Rex’s investigation into the Dos Santos network and Mayra’s involvement .

With Rex dead, Angela Burr retired, and his own agency corrupted, Jonathan Pine is isolated. He has no official backing for his pursuit of Teddy Dos Santos . The bomb that kills Jaco also shatters Pine’s makeshift operation, leaving him exposed, injured, and hunted at the start of a new war.

The Night Manager Season 2 Episode 1 is now streaming on BBC iPlayer. The first three episodes of the season will be available for streaming globally on Prime Video starting January 11, 2026.
