Cristin Milioti is openly campaigning for more episodes of The Penguin, while her co-star Colin Farrell remains hesitant. Despite the show’s critical success and award wins, HBO has not yet confirmed a second season, leaving the future of the Gotham crime saga uncertain.
Sofia Falcone’s Return
Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia Falcone in the series, has made her feelings about a second season perfectly clear. While promoting her new Netflix animated movie, she expressed immense enthusiasm for returning to the role.
“I feel like I have zero chill about it because every time I’m asked [about a Season 2], I’m like, ‘Sign me up!’”
Milioti’s commitment to the character runs deep. In another interview, she stated, “I’d play her for the rest of my life”, praising the cast and crew as a “10 out of 10” experience she would love to revisit .
Colin Farrell’s Reluctant Stance
In contrast to Milioti’s eagerness, Colin Farrell, who leads the series as Oz Cobb, has consistently shown a more balanced and reluctant attitude. He has been vocal about the physical demands of the role, which involves extensive prosthetics and makeup.
Speaking at the SAG Awards, Farrell noted, “I don’t want it. I don’t not want it”. He explained that the team “left it all in the ring” during the first season’s eight episodes and that he is in “no rush” and has “no deep desire to do it” .
More recently, Farrell confirmed “I have no idea if it’s happening”, admitting that while he’s heard the rumblings about a second season, he is unsure if it’s a good idea. He added, “if they came up with a fantastic idea… of course I’d be open to it” .
The Official Status at HBO and DC
Behind the scenes, the future of The Penguin is still being discussed. Casey Bloys, the chief of HBO and Max, has confirmed that series creator Lauren LeFranc and producer Matt Reeves have talked about a potential second season .
However, a significant complicating factor is the current focus on The Batman Part II. Matt Reeves is deeply engaged with directing the sequel, which is scheduled for an October 1, 2027 release . This project is taking priority, and any movement on a new season of The Penguin would likely have to work around its production schedule.
The show was initially conceived as a limited series, but its success has opened the door for more. Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO Channing Dungey acknowledged that “everyone is interested” in continuing but stressed that a second season is “definitely a possibility” only if the “creative stars align” and the key talent, including Farrell and Milioti, are available .
