MBC’s upcoming psychological thriller “The Perfect Lie“ has not yet aired a single episode, but the people who built the show from the ground up are already speaking openly about what makes its two leads so effective. Director Jo Young Min and writer Baek Jae Young have shared detailed thoughts on Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin, pointing to the trust between the actors and the distinct strengths each one brings to a story built on conflicting memories and a single question: who is lying?

The drama premieres on October 30, 2026, at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC, with episodes also arriving on Disney+ in select regions and Wavve in Korea. The series runs for 12 episodes, airing every Friday and Saturday until the finale on December 5, 2026.

A Reunion Ten Years in the Making

“The Perfect Lie” brings Yoo Yeon Seok and Seo Hyun Jin back together on screen for the first time since Dr. Romantic in 2016. That series became a major ratings success, with its final episode recording 27.6% nationwide ratings in Korea, according to Nielsen Korea. The two actors played doctors who moved from professional seniors and juniors to a couple. In their new project, they are placed on opposite sides of a dispute.

Director Jo Young Min has worked with each actor separately on different projects. Speaking about the reunion, he described the experience in simple terms:

“Working with both actors left me with nothing but wonderful memories. Because they understand and trust each other, we were able to explore new approaches and changes that they hadn’t shown in their previous works.”

That mutual trust, the director suggested, gave the production room to push the material in directions the actors had not explored before.

Jo Young Min on Yoo Yeon Seok’s Natural Instincts

Yoo Yeon Seok plays Min Joon Ho, a cardiac surgeon and single father who is trusted by everyone around him. The character carries a colder side when he is holding a scalpel and a warmer side toward his only son. Director Jo Young Min praised the actor’s ability to adjust in real time:

“He quickly understands the intention behind a scene, even when given a situation or direction that differs from the script, and expresses it naturally in his own way.”

That flexibility matters in a drama designed to keep viewers guessing. The director’s comment points to an actor who does not rely on a fixed approach but responds to what a scene needs in the moment.

Seo Hyun Jin Was the Writer’s First Choice

Writer Baek Jae Young did not hide how central Seo Hyun Jin was to the creation of Kang Ji Sun, an elementary school librarian who becomes entangled with Min Joon Ho after what appears to be a perfect first date. The character goes through emotions at opposite ends of the spectrum, and the writer said the actress was in her mind from the very beginning.

“When I first conceived the character of Kang Ji Sun, Seo Hyun Jin was the actress who came to mind.”

Baek Jae Young cited Seo Hyun Jin’s ability to portray both strength and vulnerability as a key reason for the casting. She also said the actress’s serious approach to the character left a strong impression during their first meeting. Director Jo Young Min added that Seo Hyun Jin has “an incredible ability to go deep into a character’s emotions and convey them so that viewers can fully feel them.”

What Makes Their Acting Showdown Work

Writer Baek Jae Young agreed with the description of the two actors’ performances as an “acting showdown.” She emphasised the psychological warfare between two people whose next moves are impossible to predict.

“I think viewers will repeatedly find themselves believing one side, growing suspicious, and then having their convictions shaken all over again.”

The writer also pointed to Yoo Yeon Seok’s range as a reason the drama works on more than one level. She said it is a joy to watch him act because his wide range allows him to move freely between subtlety and intensity. The way Min Joon Ho’s character unfolds, she added, could influence both the overall depth of the drama and Kang Ji Sun’s storyline.

The production team has described the drama as a story about a man and a woman who give completely opposite accounts of the same memory and clash fiercely in their search for the truth. Neither character is presented as an obvious liar from the start. The promotional posters carry the line, “You’re the one who lied,” which keeps the uncertainty pointed at both leads.

A Production That Finished Filming Before the Premiere

“The Perfect Lie” wrapped filming between February and August 2026, with all 12 episodes completed ahead of its television debut. The drama is directed by Jo Young Min, who previously worked with Yoo Yeon Seok on JTBC’s The Interest of Love and has been noted for his delicate handling of characters’ emotional changes. Baek Jae Young serves as the screenwriter.
