The hit HBO medical drama ‘The Pitt’ is saying goodbye to a key cast member. Supriya Ganesh, who plays Dr. Samira Mohan, will not return for Season 3. The news of her departure broke earlier in April, leaving many viewers curious about the reason. Now, the show’s star and its creator have finally spoken out to explain why this change is happening.
Ganesh has been with the series since the very first episode. Her character, Dr. Mohan, quickly became a fan favorite for her calm demeanor and dedication to patients. But the show is set in a busy teaching hospital. According to Noah Wyle and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, this kind of change is just part of real life in the emergency room.
Why Dr. Mohan is leaving the ER
The decision to write out Supriya Ganesh was not based on any behind-the-scenes drama. Instead, the team insists it was a creative choice driven by the story. Wyle, who stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, explained that keeping the same exact group of doctors together forever would not be realistic.
Wyle told Variety that this will keep happening every season because the writers struggle to find a realistic gap in time where all the residents would still be in the same place. He pointed out that emergency rooms have a high revolving door. People come in to learn, and then they move on to the next stage of their careers.
This is a teaching hospital. The whole point is that young doctors complete their training and leave. Ganesh’s character, Dr. Mohan, is a senior resident. In Season 2, she spent a lot of time trying to figure out what she wanted to do next. Her exit reflects that natural career evolution.
“It’s sort of the nature of the show. Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we’re going to turn over our cast.” — R. Scott Gemmill, Show Creator
Noah Wyle says the cast will miss her
Even though the exit makes sense for the plot, Noah Wyle made it clear that the team is sad to see her go. He had nothing but nice things to say about his co-star and the character she brought to life. He admitted that the show will feel different without her.
Wyle stated that Supriya Ganesh has been a huge part of the show since the beginning. He called Dr. Mohan a beloved character. He also mentioned that he loves playing scenes with her and working with Supriya. He wished her all the best in her next jobs and said they are going to miss her.
Ganesh pulls out of PaleyFest event
The timing of the announcement added to the confusion for fans. Supriya Ganesh was originally listed to attend the PaleyFest LA 2026 panel for ‘The Pitt’ on April 12. However, just days before the event, she told her followers she would not be there.
She wrote a message to fans on her Instagram Stories. She said she was not sure why her name was still on the site, but she would not be at PaleyFest that Sunday. She acknowledged that some fans bought tickets specifically to see her. She wanted them to know this was not a decision she took lightly. She ended by saying she loved them all.
A new doctor steps up in Season 3
While Supriya Ganesh is leaving, the show is not slowing down. The producers are already making changes to the roster for the next season. A familiar face from the night shift is getting a promotion to fill the gap.
Ayesha Harris, who plays night shift senior resident Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular for Season 3. Harris has appeared in the show before, but she will now have a much larger role in the main cast. This move fits with the show’s plan to promote from within as the cast changes over time.
