Marvel Studios is bringing back Frank Castle in a big way, and now fans know exactly how much time they will get with the character. The upcoming Punisher Special Presentation starring Jon Bernthal has officially been listed with a 60-minute run time, making it the longest Marvel Studios Special Presentation yet.

According to a filing with the Writers Guild of America, the project is a live-action production set for Disney+ with a format length of 60 minutes. The listing categorizes it under “Adventure, Action” and confirms that Jon Bernthal and Reinaldo Marcus Green wrote the script based on the Marvel Comics character.

This run time gives the special a significant edge over the previous Marvel Studios Special Presentations. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special ran for 42 minutes, while Werewolf by Night came in at 52 minutes. With a full hour, the Punisher project has more room to tell its story and deliver the intense action fans expect from Frank Castle.

What Sets This Punisher Project Apart From Previous Marvel Specials

The extended run time reflects the serious tone that Bernthal and the creative team are aiming for. The actor has been clear about his vision for the character, promising that this will not be a watered-down version of the Punisher.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios executive, described the project as “a shotgun blast of a story.” Bernthal himself said the special would present a “visceral, psychologically complex, unforgiving, no-holds-barred version of Frank.” These comments suggest the project will match the darker tone of the original Netflix series rather than pull back for a broader audience.

The production team began filming in mid-July 2025 in New York City and wrapped after a tight 12-day shoot in early August. That quick production schedule is typical for the Special Presentation format, which focuses on delivering standalone stories without the extended commitment of a full series.

Story Details And Where The Special Fits In The MCU Timeline

Set photos from the New York City shoot gave fans clues about where this story lands in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. A concert poster spotted on set carried a date of Sunday, July 18, 2027, suggesting the special takes place in that year. This places it after the events of Daredevil: Born Again, where Bernthal already made his official MCU return.

The photos also revealed signs for Gnucci’s Restaurant, pointing toward the introduction of a major villain from Punisher comics. Isabella “Ma” Gnucci is a ruthless New York mob boss who becomes one of Frank Castle’s most dangerous enemies after he kills her sons. In the comics, their conflict escalates into an all-out war, and the restaurant signage suggests the special will adapt elements of that storyline.

Bernthal first played the character in Daredevil season two on Netflix in 2016, then led his own series, The Punisher, for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. After the Netflix shows were canceled, fans waited years to see if he would return. His appearance in Daredevil: Born Again marked his official entry into the Marvel Studios-produced MCU, and this special continues that journey.

Release Plans And Connection To Other Marvel Projects

Marvel Studios is positioning this as the third Special Presentation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The project shares continuity with existing films and television series, meaning it will connect to the larger story being told across Phase Six.

The release timing has been a moving target. Early reports suggested the special would arrive alongside Daredevil: Born Again season two, but Bernthal later clarified that it would release “around the same time” as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That film is currently scheduled for July 2026, giving fans a likely window for when they can expect the Punisher special to drop on Disney+.

Reinaldo Marcus Green directs the project, marking his second collaboration with Bernthal after working together on the 2022 miniseries We Own This City. Green also co-wrote the script with Bernthal, giving the actor significant creative control over how his character is portrayed.

Jason R. Moore and Roe Rancell are attached in supporting roles. Moore previously appeared alongside Bernthal in the Netflix Punisher series, playing Curtis Hoyle, a friend and former military comrade of Frank Castle.

The special comes from an idea Bernthal developed while filming Daredevil: Born Again. He conceived the story and brought it to Marvel Studios, who greenlit the project as a standalone presentation. This level of creative input from the actor shows the trust Marvel has in his understanding of the character after playing Frank Castle for nearly a decade.
