State Comptroller Atkins has decided to close one school before the end of the year, and Springfield Elementary lands on the chopping block because of its terrible test results. Principal Skinner delivers the update to Marge and the teachers, and most of the staff lose hope right away. Marge refuses to give up and takes charge as the new PTA president.
Marge’s Book Fair Plan Brings a Reclusive Author to Town
Marge’s idea centers on the school’s upcoming book fair. She hopes to invite Constance Clavinger, a reclusive British children’s author voiced by Emma Thompson, to appear at the event. Constance wrote the beloved book The Plucky Little Goat, a story that carries special meaning for Marge because she and Homer used to read it to Bart and Lisa. Constance has been out of the public eye for about three decades, but Marge convinces her to unveil the follow-up book at the fair. The hope is that the attention will make it difficult for Atkins to shut the school down.
Homer’s Airport Pickup Goes Completely Wrong
Helen Lovejoy creates a crisis at the book fair, forcing Marge to ask Homer to pick up Constance from the airport and bring her to the school. Homer expects a polite British author who writes about kindness, but Constance turns out to be a handful. She delays the trip, gets into a shoplifting incident at a mall, and eventually takes off in Homer’s car. Homer tracks her down using a device on his sandwich and reads her follow-up book, only to find that the story is deeply pessimistic and bleak. Constance admits she is tired of upholding the image her first book created and wants to break it with a darker story.
Constance Has a Change of Heart at the Book Fair
In the final moments of the premiere, Constance refuses Homer’s pleas to change the story and steps up to read. When she sees the turnout of parents and children, she has a change of heart and delivers a different ending. The episode also features Colin Jost as himself, reading his own children’s book to the Springfield Elementary audience, who respond with complete indifference. Homer daydreams that Springfield turns into settings from kids’ books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Richard Scarry’s universe.

The Season 38 premiere aired on Fox at 8 p.m. ET/PT on September 27, 2026, anchoring the network’s Animation Domination block. The episode was written by Dan Vebber and directed by Matthew Nastuk.
