Hulu officially confirmed The Testaments will return for a second season just days before the first season finale aired on May 27, 2026. The renewal came after the The Handmaid’s Tale sequel collected more than 45 million streaming hours globally across Hulu and Disney+.
Creator Bruce Miller and his writers room are already working on the next chapter. The big question on every viewer’s mind: who will be back and who is saying goodbye to Gilead?
Returning Stars Confirmed for The Testaments Season 2
Chase Infiniti will return as Agnes MacKenzie, one of the two central young women navigating life inside Gilead’s strict system. Her character is actually June and Luke’s daughter Hannah, a major tie to the original series. Infiniti’s performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and the show’s future depends heavily on her character’s choices.
Lucy Halliday is also coming back as Daisy, the outsider who chose to stay inside Gilead as an undercover operative at the end of season one. Her decision to remain inside enemy territory sets up major conflict for the upcoming episodes.
Elisabeth Moss will reprise her role as June Osborne, though her appearances will likely remain limited. Moss won six Emmy Awards for playing June on The Handmaid’s Tale, and her presence connects both shows together.
Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia, the complicated enforcer who runs the elite school for future wives. Dowd won an Emmy for this role on the original series, and her character’s true loyalties remain unclear heading into season two.
Mattea Conforti is confirmed to return as Becka Grove. In season one, Becka killed her abusive father Dr. Grove, but her mother took the blame. Becka later married Garth, and her story is far from finished.
Mabel Li will likely return as Aunt Vidala, the ruthless authority figure who enforces Gilead’s rules with an iron fist. Brad Alexander returns as Garth Chapin, the young Commander who married Becka. Rowan Blanchard is also coming back as Shunammite, the privileged daughter from a powerful Gilead family.
Other Cast Members Expected to Return
Several supporting characters should appear in season two based on their storylines:
- Isolde Ardies as Hulda, the naive but liked student
- Amy Seimetz as Paula, Agnes’s stepmother navigating life after marriage
- Nate Corddry as Commander MacKenzie, Agnes’s father
- Charlie Carrick as Commander Judd
- Kira Guloien as Rosa, the maternal figure for Agnes
- Eva Foote as Aunt Estee, the youngest and most compassionate Aunt
- Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana, Aunt Vidala’s right hand
- Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba, the ambitious and competitive student
- Birva Pandya as Miriam, another student struggling with pressure
Bruce Miller talked about the challenge of keeping the young cast age-appropriate for their roles.
“We’re very excited and deep into figuring out what to do for season two. The writers’ room has been working for a while. Our younger actresses are younger. And no matter how much money you put into it, they’re not going to stay younger. Time does go on, and we very much want to stay on track to make this show as regularly as possible. I think our cast is astonishing, and I want to make sure we use them while they fit the part.”
Who Will Not Return for Season Two
Randal Edwards will not return as Dr. Grove. His character was killed off in episode nine of season one after Becka murdered him. Dead characters rarely come back in the Gilead universe unless shown in flashbacks.
Kate Hewlett likely will not return as Mrs. Grove either. At the end of episode ten, Mrs. Grove took the blame for her husband’s murder to protect Becka, leading to her own death. That closes the door on both Grove family members appearing in season two.

What to Expect From Season Two Storylines
The second season will pick up directly after the season one finale events. Daisy made the choice to stay inside Gilead as an undercover operative. Agnes continues to question everything she was raised to believe. Aunt Lydia must decide where her true loyalties lie.
New characters will likely join the cast to keep storylines fresh, though Hulu has not announced any new additions yet. Filming has not started, and Hulu has not set a release date for season two. Based on typical production schedules, spring 2027 is a realistic target.
The Testaments season one is streaming now on Hulu in the United States, on Disney+ in the United Kingdom and Canada, and on Disney+ in Australia and India.
