Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez are teaming up for a new animated movie from Illumination. The film, titled Not Alone, is an alien-themed animated feature from the studio behind Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The project was officially announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 22, 2026.
Chalamet teased the announcement on his Instagram story the night before, posting a photo of a cloudy sky with the caption “new movie announcement tmrw :)” along with a small rocket emoji. The studio and Universal Pictures shared the film’s poster on social media the following day.
Chalamet and Gomez Voice Lead Characters
The film marks Chalamet’s first feature-length animated movie. He will voice the character Joe, described as an “introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone.” Gomez will play Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket.”
The official synopsis reveals that Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of Fran’s revolutionary rocket. There are immediate sparks between them, but neither character is particularly good at romance. Their lives become complicated when three tiny alien fugitives take refuge in Joe’s home.
These three aliens – named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm – are on the run from a zealous but inept law enforcement officer named Zandro. They determine that Fran’s rocket could provide their means of getting back home safely.
Star-Studded Voice Cast and Creative Team
The voice cast features several notable names. British comedic actors Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou will voice the three alien characters. Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein will voice Officer Zandro. Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris round out the supporting cast.
The film is directed by Illumination veterans. Eric Guillon, who co-directed Despicable Me 3 and served as designer on Despicable Me and Minions, will direct alongside Claire Dodgson (editor on The Lorax and Minions) and Jonathan Del Val (co-director of Minions: The Rise of Gru). Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri will produce the film, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers.

Release Date and Significance
Not Alone is scheduled for release on April 16, 2027, in theaters worldwide. The film reunites Chalamet and Gomez, who previously worked together on the 2019 film A Rainy Day in New York. This also marks Chalamet’s first time voicing a character in a feature-length animated film.
For Gomez, this project adds to her upcoming slate, which includes portraying Grammy-winning singer Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. Chalamet was most recently seen in Marty Supreme, which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Picture as a producer. He is also set to reprise his role as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three, scheduled for release in December.
