Tom Cruise has finally addressed one of Hollywood’s longest-running rumors. The 64-year-old actor sat down with GQ for its October 2026 global cover story, his first cover for the magazine in 20 years and his first long-form interview with a US publication in over a decade. Speaking with GQ’s Zach Baron, Cruise confirmed that he is indeed intense on set and made it clear he does not apologize for it.
Tom Cruise Confirms the Rumors Are True
Cruise tackled his reputation head-on during the interview. He said he warns co-stars about his working style before filming begins.
“I work hard, and people that work with me, they know. I expect a lot and I’m upfront about it. It’s like: ‘The rumors are true. And do you want this?’” Cruise told GQ.
He went further, describing exactly how he pitches himself to new collaborators.
“Trust me, the rumors are true. I’ll be here before you. What experience do you want?” he said.
The actor explained that his intensity comes from a real desire to learn and understand every part of filmmaking. Even as a child, people told him he was too intense. “I don’t know what to say. I am intense,” he recalled with a laugh. “I got a very good sense of humor about it.”
Cruise also shared a simple habit that keeps him focused. He keeps his phone “as far away from me as possible” whether he is on set or off. He prefers face-to-face conversations and tells his crew not to send detailed emails. “Come talk to me. I like to talk to people,” he said.

Streaming platforms came up during the conversation. Cruise made his position clear without dismissing other mediums.
“I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix. I think it’s great. Create jobs and everything. But what I like about cinema is it is all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience,” he said.
He also noted that Netflix helps audiences discover different kinds of films. “When you look at Netflix, they are able to taste and see these different kinds of films. So those things we’ve discovered in terms of how a library travels globally,” Cruise added.
Digger Release Date Cast and Theaters
Cruise is currently promoting his upcoming film Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The film is a satirical black comedy where Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon tasked with saving the world from an ecological disaster he caused in the first place.
Warner Bros. will release Digger in theaters worldwide on October 2, 2026. The film will be available in cinemas and IMAX. It was shot entirely in VistaVision, a rare large-format process that adds a distinct visual quality to the film.
The cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, and Sophie Wilde. John Goodman plays the US President, Sandra Hüller plays Digger’s sister Emma Rockwell, and Riz Ahmed plays Ganesh, a scientist assisting the President.
Cruise told GQ that Iñárritu spent 10 years preparing the project and first introduced it to him around 2018.
Top Gun Maverick on Netflix and Top Gun 3
Top Gun: Maverick arrives on Netflix on September 22, 2026. The 2022 blockbuster remains Cruise’s only billion-dollar film and will be available to stream in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and other regions.
Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2026 that Top Gun 3 is officially in development with Cruise returning as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The script is currently underway, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer also attached.

GQ asked Cruise if he fears death, given his long history of performing dangerous stunts. His answer was direct.
“So do I fear death? No. I don’t. It’s not like I’m not afraid. I don’t mind the feeling,” Cruise said.
He described his approach to life as an adventure. “I’m not afraid to be afraid,” he told the magazine.
Cruise also spoke about his efforts to connect with younger actors. His Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell previously revealed that Cruise sent him a six-hour video breaking down film history and moviemaking techniques. Cruise explained he wanted to help others understand lenses, frames, and the tools of cinema.
“It was just very basic. It was something to have people understand, just to have a different concept of lenses and what the lens is and what the frame is,” Cruise said.
The GQ October 2026 issue marks the magazine’s largest-ever cover project, running across 20 countries and territories. Cruise has now appeared on eight GQ US covers, the most of any cover star in the publication’s history.
