The popular weekend drama Typhoon Family has ignited intense discussion among viewers following a shocking scene in its recent episode. The show, which is approaching its finale, took a dramatic turn when a character violently attacked his own father, leading to widespread debate about whether the storyline has gone too far.
The controversial moment occurred in Episode 14, which aired on November 23. After constant criticism from his father, the character Hyun-jun reached his breaking point. In a fit of rage, he struck his father on the head with a heavy trophy after being compared unfavorably to his business rival, Tae-poong. The scene grew even more disturbing when Hyun-jun locked his unconscious father in a storage container.
Unexpected Story Shift Sparks Viewer Backlash
The dramatic shift toward what many are calling “makjang” territoryโa Korean term for over-the-top melodramaโhas divided the audience. Many viewers expressed discomfort with the portrayal of violence between family members so close to the series conclusion.
One viewer commented on the disturbing nature of the scene: “Even for a drama, showing a child hitting a parent is too much. They crossed the line.” Another noted they had to change the channel while watching with their children, calling the content inappropriate for family viewing.
The editing choices also came under fire, particularly the immediate transition from the violent patricide scene to a lighthearted beach date between the main couple. This abrupt shift in tone left many viewers confused about the show’s direction.
“How do you go from a patricide scene to a beach date? What is happening?” asked one frustrated viewer.
Business Conflicts Come to a Head
The dramatic father-son conflict emerged from ongoing business tensions within the storyline. Hyun-jun’s father, Pyo Park Ho, had repeatedly expressed admiration for his business rival Tae-poong, going so far as to tell his son he would prefer having someone like Tae-poong as a child.
This rejection pushed Hyun-jun to his breaking point. His violent outburst represented the culmination of episodes of built-up resentment and frustration at never receiving his father’s approval, despite his efforts to prove himself in the family business.
Meanwhile, the episode also focused on Tae-poong’s efforts to save his company through a promissory note dating back nine years. The document proved that Hyun-jun’s father had borrowed 40 million KRW from Tae-poong’s father and signed over 30% of his company shares as collateral.
Romance Provides Brief Respite
Amid the escalating drama, the relationship between main characters Tae-poong and Mi-seon continued to develop. Following Mi-seon’s near-death experience in a warehouse fire, the two confessed their feelings and officially began dating.
The couple enjoyed a brief seaside getaway with family members, providing viewers with some relief from the intense business conflicts and family drama. Their natural chemistry and lighthearted moments offered a counterbalance to the darker elements of the episode.
This subplot also explored the evolving relationship between secondary couple Nam-mo and Mi-ho, who faced their own challenges when Mi-ho’s ex-boyfriend reappeared, causing tension between the pair.
Network Response and Future Episodes
Despite the controversial content, the episode scored strong ratings for the network. According to Nielsen Korea, Episode 14 achieved a nationwide rating of 9.5% among paid households, peaking at 10.3%. This represented a significant increase from the previous episode’s 7.3% rating.
The episode also ranked first in its time slot among the key 20-49 demographic, drawing an average of 2.7% in this category.
With only two episodes remaining in the series, questions remain about how the drama will resolve multiple storylines. The fate of Hyun-jun’s father remains uncertain, while Typhoon Company faces new challenges despite recently returning to its original office space.
The series conclusion will air over the weekend, with Episode 15 scheduled for Saturday, November 29, and the final Episode 16 on Sunday, November 30, at 9:10 PM on tvN.
