Vijay Sethupathi has addressed the controversy surrounding his comments on Bigg Boss Tamil 10, clarifying that his remarks about leadership were directed only at a contestant and had no connection to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. Speaking at the audio launch of his upcoming film Baththa in Chennai on September 18, 2026, the actor also opened up about a warm personal interaction with the Chief Minister, describing him as a “cute fellow,” and shared his affection for Vijay’s son, director Jason Sanjay.
The Bigg Boss Remark That Sparked a Debate
The controversy began during a recent episode of Bigg Boss Tamil 10, which premiered on September 6, 2026, on Star Vijay and JioHotstar. While addressing contestant Shathiga about her captaincy, Sethupathi spoke firmly about the responsibilities of a leader.
“Making reckless promises and then, when problems and responsibilities arise, blaming the opposition and running away is not leadership. It is deception.”
Sethupathi did not name any political figure. However, viewers and social media users quickly began drawing comparisons between his words and Chief Minister Vijay, who assumed office on May 10, 2026. The timing of the episode, coming just months after Vijay’s political transition, fueled widespread speculation online.
Vijay Sethupathi Sets the Record Straight
The actor used the platform of the Baththa audio launch to directly address the misunderstanding. He clarified that his guidance on the reality show was meant exclusively for the contestants and had no bearing on anyone outside the Bigg Boss house.
“Whatever I discuss on this stage is only between the contestants and me. They are not meant for anybody outside. I thought you would all understand that on your own. But I should have clarified it last week itself. Now the situation has arisen for me to clarify, so I am doing it.”
The show’s channel also issued a statement on social media, emphasising that all conversations and interactions on the programme exist strictly within its entertainment narrative and should not be interpreted as comments on any person or institution outside the show.
A Warm Word for Chief Minister Vijay
Amid the speculation, Sethupathi chose to speak warmly about his personal equation with Vijay. He recalled a phone call he received from the Chief Minister after he wished Jason Sanjay on his birthday.
“I wished Sanjay on his birthday. He called me and said, ‘Friend, thank you so much. He was very happy.’ I didn’t expect that because he’s a big superstar, and I was surprised that Sanjay liked me.”
Sethupathi also remembered visiting the sets of Jana Nayagan, where he met Vijay and described him affectionately. “I told him, ‘Hey, how lucky you are to have such a big star in your house?’” he recounted, calling the Chief Minister a “cute fellow”.
The two actors share a professional history, having appeared together in the 2021 blockbuster Master, where Sethupathi played the antagonist opposite Vijay.
Jason Sanjay Sends a Hug Through a Common Friend
The affection between the two families is clearly mutual. Sethupathi revealed that Jason Sanjay conveyed a message to him through actor Rohan. “Tell him that I am sending him a hug,” Sethupathi recounted, describing the young filmmaker as a “cute fellow” as well.
Jason Sanjay is currently preparing for the release of his directorial debut, Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah. The film’s audio and trailer launch took place in Chennai on September 18, and it is scheduled to reach theatres on October 2, 2026. Interestingly, Sigma will clash at the box office with Sethupathi’s own Baththa, which releases on October 1, 2026.

“No, no. Because I want the promotion to be about the film and I don’t want that to overlap and obviously he is the CM today, so you know you have so much responsibility.”
Jason also shared that his father is eagerly waiting to watch the film. “My dad is very excited about the release of my film. But he does not need to come for the promotions. He will not come either. He has much bigger responsibilities,” he said, adding that Vijay has given him his fans as his greatest inheritance.

Baththa, directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, features Sethupathi in a rugged avatar set against the backdrop of the 1980s and marks his third collaboration with the director after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi. Sigma, produced by Lyca Productions, marks the beginning of Jason Sanjay’s journey behind the camera, with music composed by Thaman.
