The popular Netflix series Squid Game has returned with its second season, and fans are already eager for news about a potential third season. Director Hwang Dong Hyeok has shared some interesting details about the future of the show.
Squid Game’s Global Popularity
Squid Game has once again proven its global appeal. Following the release of its second season on December 26, it quickly rose to the top of Netflix charts in 92 countries by December 27. By December 28, it had also achieved the number one spot in New Zealand, and ultimately reached the top position in every country where Netflix is available. The show’s exploration of themes like “desire,” “survival,” and “morality” has resonated with viewers worldwide, making it a significant cultural phenomenon. Despite some mixed reviews after the second season’s release, the show’s viewership continues to grow.
Director’s Insights into Seasons Two and Three
In a recent interview, Hwang Dong Hyeok revealed that seasons two and three were initially conceived as one long narrative.
I planned on writing it over 8-9 episodes, but after finishing it, it went over ten episodes. I felt it was too long to fit into one season.
This led to the decision to split the story into two separate seasons. The director explained:
We separated the seasons to give it a break and a proper ending. Season three is scheduled to be released next summer or fall.
This means fans can expect the next installment of Squid Game sometime in mid to late 2024.
Hints of What’s to Come
Hwang Dong Hyeok also encouraged viewers to tune in for season three, suggesting it will be even more intense than the previous seasons. Adding to the excitement, actor Choi Gwi Hwa stated:
the real game starts in season three.
This comment builds anticipation for what promises to be a thrilling continuation of the Squid Game story.
