The couple has explained that after undergoing standard genetic screening to ensure a healthy pregnancy, their compatible donor options were extremely limited. Dupart stated, “Only about 3% of donor sperm is from Black men”. In a 2023 episode of Brat Loves Judy, Da Brat commented that the single Black donor option they saw was not what they wanted, making a joke that was later criticized as offensive. She has since apologized and clarified that the remark was taken out of context.
In later interviews, Dupart elaborated on the medical process, explaining, “As soon as we put in my seven things [for genetic screening], we had no Black people available”. She emphasized that the priority was health and genetic compatibility, not race.

Dupart told People magazine, “We received death threats, people told us things like we should miscarry”. This was particularly painful given Da Brat’s previous miscarriage.
