Widow’s Bay has etched its name into television history. The Apple TV horror-comedy series won 14 Emmys at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, setting a new record for the most wins by a comedy series in a single season. The show, led by Matthew Rhys, surpassed the previous record of 13 wins held by Apple TV’s The Studio from 2025. With its unique blend of genuine horror and character-driven comedy, the series has become a breakout hit, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.
What Widow’s Bay Is About
Widow’s Bay is set on a fictional island 40 miles off the coast of New England. The story follows Mayor Tom Loftis (played by Matthew Rhys), a man desperate to revive his struggling community. The island has no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception, and a population of superstitious locals who believe their home is cursed. Tom wants to turn the island into a tourist destination, similar to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. He wants the locals to respect him, but they think he is soft and cowardly. And according to the show’s own description, he is. But Tom is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and to bring tourists to the island. Miraculously, he succeeds. Tourists finally start coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.
The series blends character-driven comedy with supernatural horror. It shifts between deadpan humor, unsettling moments, and more conventional scares. Rhys has said he both laughed and felt frightened when he first read the script. The show draws on several horror traditions, including supernatural horror, folk horror, and slasher elements. Creator Katie Dippold has cited films such as Jaws and Halloween as influences. Critics have described it as a grown-up take on Stranger Things, a spooky but cozy horror series, and a character comedy that can turn genuinely unsettling.
The Record-Breaking Emmy Night
Widow’s Bay entered the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards with 19 nominations, the third-most of any series that year. It went on to win 14 of them. The show had already collected eight awards at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies on September 6, 2026. These included awards for guest actress Betty Gilpin, casting, cinematography, music composition, music supervision, production design, sound editing, and sound mixing. The main telecast on September 14 added six more wins, bringing the total to 14. The series won Outstanding Comedy Series, and Matthew Rhys took home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Stephen Root won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Katie Dippold received the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
Rhys made history that night by becoming the first actor to win two lead acting Emmys on the same evening. He also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his role in The Beast in Me. In his acceptance speech, Rhys thanked his family and his home country. “To the great people of Wales, who were as much a nurturer as anything else, we are a small but mighty nation,” he said. Backstage, while holding two of his Emmys, he noted, “The celebrations will be long, varied, and I hope at times wild”.
The Cast and Characters
Widow’s Bay features an ensemble cast led by Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis. Kate O’Flynn plays Patricia, Tom’s eager and awkward mayoral assistant. Stephen Root portrays Wyck, a superstitious local fisherman. Kingston Rumi Southwick plays Evan, Tom’s teenage son. Kevin Carroll is Sheriff Bechir, and Dale Dickey appears as one of the town’s records clerks. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Jeff Hiller.
From Low-Profile Debut to Emmy Glory
Widow’s Bay premiered on April 29, 2026, with its first two episodes. New episodes followed every Wednesday through June 17, 2026. The first season consists of 10 episodes, with runtimes between 31 and 48 minutes. The full season is now available to stream on Apple TV.
The show was nearly two decades in the making. Creator Katie Dippold first developed the idea around 18 years ago. The concept was partly inspired by her childhood in New Jersey, where she and her friends visited places they believed were haunted. An early version of the pilot helped her land a writing job on Parks and Recreation. She later reworked the project because she felt the original version leaned too heavily on comedy. The series hails from Apple Studios and is created, showrun, and executive produced by Dippold. Hiro Murai executive produces through his banner Chum Films alongside Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, and Rhys. Murai directed five episodes this season, in addition to directors Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung.
Critical Acclaim and Season Two
Widow’s Bay has received widespread critical praise. It holds a 97% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 92% audience score. It also reached the No. 1 spot on Apple TV’s Most Popular Now list. On June 11, 2026, just six days before the season finale, Apple TV announced a season two renewal for the series. Jeff Hiller has been upped to a series regular for the second season. The season one finale, which aired on June 17, 2026, ended with a cliffhanger involving the island’s church bell and a revelation about the Warren bloodline.

Widow’s Bay‘s record-breaking win cements Apple TV‘s status as the dominant force in Emmy comedy categories. Between Widow’s Bay, The Studio, and Ted Lasso, Apple has won Best Comedy Series four times in six seasons. The Studio previously held the single-year record with 13 wins in 2025, while Severance earned eight that same year. Ted Lasso, Apple’s most internationally recognized comedy, won seven Emmys in its strongest single year and has collected 13 awards overall.
“Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing,” Dippold said as she accepted the best comedy award. “They truly just let us do this weird show.”
